With winter weather conditions sweeping the area, Pulaski County Emergency Management Agency recently shared some important driving reminders for winter storm conditions.
The first driving tip is a reminder that snow plows typically have large blind spots, and that driving too close to them increases the risks of being hit with flying debris, experiencing low visibility due to blowing snow, and not having enough time to react to a stopping or wide-turning plow.
Additionally, some plows have wing blades to the right side, so drivers should never try to pass a snow plow on the right side. Indiana Department of Transportation recommends that drivers stay back at least 10 car lengths, or 200 feet, from driving snow plows. This distance gives drivers time to react and allows the plow operator to see them.
The other tip for winter weather driving is the simple reminder to take it slow in the snow, even with 4-wheel drive. When the roads have ice and snow on them, all vehicles take longer to slow down and stop, and even 4-wheel drive vehicles can lose traction in bad weather conditions.
