Frigid weather safety tips

Several area agencies have been sharing tips and suggestions for dealing with the potentially dangerous, frigid weather conditions sweeping through the area this weekend.

Some of the most common tips include:

Prevent frozen pipes by letting a faucet drip slightly. Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate.

During the colder weather it is recommended to check on your neighbors, especially those that are elderly or who have limited mobility.

That being said, bundle up and limit time outside if possible. If being outdoors is unavoidable, wear layers, cover exposed skin, and be on the lookout for signs of frostbite or hypothermia; keeping in mind that frostbite can occur in a matter of minutes and most commonly affects fingers, toes, ears, and the nose. Early signs of frostbite include numbness, tingling, or skin that appears pale, waxy, or hard.

Use heaters and generators safely: Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything flammable, and never use your oven to heat your home. Never run a generator indoors, or in an attached garage, and make sure your Carbon Monoxide detectors are working.

Bring pets indoors, or make sure they have proper shelter and warm bedding away from the cold.

Finally, for those who need a place to get out of the cold, Indiana 211 is a resource that can help citizens find warming centers in their local area.

Dial 211 on your phone, text your zip code to 828-211, or visit IN211.org to see a list of warming centers; which typically include local libraries, fire departments, city buildings, and sheriff’s offices.
