According to a release from the La Porte Police Department, on January 18, 2026, officers responded to a report of a protection order violation involving a female victim and her former boyfriend, Michael Layton, age 32.

During the investigation, officers confirmed an active no-contact order was in place against Layton stemming from a prior domestic battery and strangulation arrest.

As the investigation progressed, it was learned that the victim sustained severe injuries requiring emergency medical treatment and transport to multiple hospitals.

On Thursday, January 22, 2026, detectives conducted a follow-up interview with the victim and learned that her injuries will ultimately result in the surgical removal of her eye. The victim further reported that after the assault, the suspect confined her inside their apartment for approximately two weeks before she was able to escape and obtain medical care.

The victim also provided information indicating the suspect was actively packing the apartment and intended to flee the state. Due to the severity of the allegations and the risk factors involved, a search warrant was obtained, and La Porte Police SWAT was activated to assist with taking the suspect into custody.

SWAT executed the warrant and Michael Layton was taken into custody without incident.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. There is no threat to the general public at this time.

The La Porte Police Department would like to thank all officers, detectives, medical personnel, and assisting agencies involved for their swift and professional response in this case.
