North Judson-San Pierre releases announcement ahead of potential student protest/walkout

On Friday, February 13th, the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation shared an announcement in regards to a potential student protest and/or walkout.

The announcement states that as a public school district, the NJSP School Corporation does not organize, promote, or endorse any student-led walkouts or demonstrations, and that all NJSP employees must remain neutral in the matter.

The announcement states that at the same time, the corporation respects the students’ rights to express themselves, and that its responsibility is to ensure that the school remains safe, orderly and focused on student learning.

The announcement states that attendance expectations and policies will remain in place, as will lessons and learning in the classroom.

Students who choose to participate need parental approval with a parent or guardian phoning the school to indicate that their student will be leaving campus. Those students will receive a Verified Absence, which does count towards the 4-day allotment per semester.

Students who participate without gaining parental approval will be considered Truant and will receive consequences per the Student Handbook. Truant students will not be allowed to return for the remainder of the school day.

Any missed work will be allowed to be made up in a reasonable amount of time following the student’s return to school.

The announcement ends with the school stating: It is our sincere hope that any students who choose to participate will do so with a high level of maturity and in a manner that respects the rights and opinions of others.
