Winamac Volunteer Fire Department recently shared some important information regarding carbon monoxide poisoning and how to prevent it.
Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and dangerous gas. During winter weather the risk for carbon monoxide poisoning increases because homes are sealed, and alternative heat sources are used.
To help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, never use ovens or stovetops to heat your homes, and never use charcoal grills indoors or in a garage. All generators should be outside and at least 20 feet from doors and windows. Make sure chimneys and vents are clear, and never run vehicles in the garage, even with the garage door open.
Some common signs of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, fatigue, confusion, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and shortness of breath.
Winamac Volunteer Fire Department shares that a Carbon Monoxide detector should be on every level of a home, including the basement. Detectors should be tested monthly to make sure they are working properly, and the expiration date should be checked as they do expire.
If your carbon monoxide detector goes off, or if you have signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, leave the home immediately and call 911.
