The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office and Winamac Police Department shared earlier this week that another new phone scam is targeting citizens.
This scam involves callers being told by someone falsely claiming to be from law enforcement to pay a fee via Bitcoin. The scammers state that if the caller doesn’t pay the fee they will be arrested.
The announcement notes that Pulaski County Department members will never call citizens for a bond, fee, ankle monitors, or to make any payment to avoid an arrest; and no law enforcement agency accepts Bitcoin or cryptocurrency as payment for anything.
Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office notes that if something doesn’t seem right with the information you’re being given over the phone, it most likely isn’t. The best course of action if you suspect you may be being scammed is to hang up the phone and call the direct number to the agency claiming to call you.
