This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, which is a week to celebrate officials such as 911 dispatchers and other emergency call receivers.
Dispatchers are celebrated for their life-saving advice, calm response in high-stress situations, and for being the “first, first responders” in an emergency.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security shared tips this week for those who are calling 911, to help our dispatchers best respond to emergency situations.
If you are calling 911, it is recommended that you:
- Take a deep breath and stay as calm as possible. Try to speak clearly and listen carefully to the dispatcher. Be ready to answer questions about what is going on around you.
- Know your location. Helpful information to have is the address or closest intersection, any landmarks or building names, and the apartment or room number you are in. If you do not know the exact address, share as many details as possible.
- Follow instructions. The dispatcher may be giving you life-saving instructions, including guidance on performing CPR, first aid steps, or safety directions. Stay on the line unless instructed to hang up the phone.
As a reminder, if you are in a situation where you cannot safely make a phone call, Indiana offers a text-to-911 program.
If you are in danger and cannot speak, or if calling could put you at risk, you can text 911 your location and the type of emergency you’re experiencing.
Don’t forget to show appreciation to local dispatchers for the essential work they do this week.
