Starke County Commissioners table building permit fee increase

The Starke County Commissioners have tabled a decision on whether or not to increase building permit fees.

During a lengthy and divided discussion at last week’s Commissioner’s meeting, county staff proposed raising permit fees by at least 20-25%, stating that the current rates have not kept pace with rising costs, meaning the Building department is operating at a significant annual deficit. The fees help to cover inspections, staffing, and administrative expenses, and currently fall short by around $100,000 or more per year.

Those who support an increase argued that the system has gone almost a decade without any adjustments, and that costs have steadily risen over that time.

Other board members expressed concern about the impact on affordability and home builders, especially for smaller or starter homes.

A smaller 10% increase was discussed, as well as no increase at all, or a tiered system based on the size of the home, but ultimately, no consensus was reached.

Commissioners voted to table the fee increase proposal, in order to further review it. They also requested additional information comparing permit fees and structures in area counties.

The issue will be revisited next month.
