Starke County Commissioners discussed a few county facility updates during Monday’s meeting this week; with concerns involving a proposed coroner project, and the old jail roof.
During discussion on the coroner’s office, officials said a planned addition project has encountered permitting issues and increasing costs. The question was raised whether continuing with the current approach made the most sense, or if starting over with a different building concept may be more practical. Space and storage concerns were also discussed, along with increased call volume over time. Following discussion, commissioners voted to table the matter for additional review.
Commissioners also heard a presentation regarding the old jail roof. Representatives from a roofing company said they believe the building has storm damage and outlined an insurance-based process they said could potentially reduce county costs. County officials also discussed legal and bidding requirements tied to the project. Following discussion regarding the proposed insurance process and contract terms, commissioners approved a motion related to the matter.
