The La Porte County Health Department shared an announcement regarding free in-home well water test kits.
These kits are available for La Porte County residential well owners.
The service is to celebrate National Drinking Water Week and is being offered during the month of May on a first-come, first-served basis to La Porte County residents with private wells.
Test kits are available for pick up at both La Porte and Michigan City Health Department offices, while supplies last, with a limit of one kit per household.
The announcement continued with the Health Department reminding homeowners with wells about the importance of getting drinking water tested regularly. Residential well owners have sole responsibility for ensuring the safety of their drinking water, including maintaining the well system to prevent contamination.
These free test kits are screening tests and can’t be used for legal documentation, property transfers, or new well installation regulations.
The screening kit includes a coliform bacteria test and water quality tests for pH, nitrate, nitrite, copper, total hardness, total alkalinity, and iron.
Those wishing to pick up a free testing kit need to bring proof of La Porte County residence.
