Our reporting partners at WNDU have shared that the body of a 13-year-old boy who went missing in Lake Michigan earlier this week has been recovered.
Michigan City Police say the Indiana Department of Natural Resources located the boy Wednesday morning near the Washington Park pier. Authorities reported he was found in approximately 11 feet of water at around 7:45 a.m.
The search began after the boy entered Lake Michigan during hazardous swimming conditions and failed to return to the surface. At the time, high swim risk warnings were in effect across Lake Michigan shorelines in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.
Emergency crews had searched immediately following the incident but later suspended operations Monday evening and again Tuesday because conditions on the water created safety concerns for responders.
During the recovery effort, officials said three divers with the Michigan City Fire Department were treated at a hospital for minor injuries. An Indiana Department of Natural Resources diver was also injured and evaluated at the scene.
The boy’s identity has not been released.
