A release from the Starke County Community Foundation shares that The Friends of the Starke County Public Library is relaunching.
Community members are invited to get involved in supporting local libraries through fundraising, volunteerism, and advocacy.
“Friends” groups are official nonprofit organizations that work alongside library systems to help expand programs, services, and community outreach. The organization supports the Starke County Public Library System, including the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox and branches in Hamlet, San Pierre, and Koontz Lake.
The group held its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, May 27, with library staff and residents, who are interested in rebuilding the organization, in attendance. During the meeting, Donna DeRuntz announced that the Starke County Community Foundation’s Maudie Cole Mullins Memorial Fund granted $1,000 to assist with startup costs. DeRuntz established the fund in honor of her grandmother, Maudie Cole Mullins.
The organization is currently working to establish officers, including a president, vice president, and treasurer. Katie Lynch, Business Office Manager for the Starke County Public Library System, and others have been trying to reestablish the “Friends” since 2020 and encourage interested residents to get involved.
Anyone interested in learning more or joining the organization is invited to attend the next meeting at 10 a.m. Central on Tuesday, July 28, at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox. Questions can be directed to friends@scpls.org.
