Search suspended for missing child at Washington Park Beach

LA PORTE COUNTY — Earlier this week, multiple agencies responded after a child was reported missing in the water near Washington Park Beach in Michigan City.

In an announcement made by the Michigan City Fire Department, they report that the La Porte County Dispatch Center received a report around 5:43pm on Tuesday evening that a child was seen entering the water on the east side of the pier, south of the lighthouse.

Bystanders reported that the child, who was seen wearing red shorts, had entered the water and disappeared beneath the surface.

An immediate search response was launched and responding agencies included the Michigan City Fire Department, the Michigan City Police Department, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Long Beach Police Department, La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, and La Porte County Emergency Medical Services.

Search efforts included multiple divers from different agencies, drone technology, and assistance from a fishing charter boat. A medical helicopter was dispatched to the area and remained on standby during the search.

According to the fire department, difficult water conditions complicated rescue efforts, and after an extensive search, dive operations were suspended due to hazardous conditions to responders. During the operation, three Michigan City Fire Department divers sustained minor injuries and transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. A DNR diver was also injured in the search and was evaluated by EMS at the scene.

Officials said that strong currents, changing wave action, and limited underwater visibility can quickly overwhelm swimmers and rescuers alike. The department urges residents and visitors to monitor beach conditions, follow all posted warnings, and to avoid entering the water when hazardous conditions exist.

This investigation remains ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes available.able.
