Knox announces plans for Union Pacific’s Big Boy 4014 Steam Engine July 16

Knox is preparing for an influx of visitors next week as Union Pacific’s Big Boy 4014 steam locomotive is scheduled to make a whistle stop in the city.

Mayor Dennis Estok said the historic steam engine is expected to arrive Thursday, July 16, at approximately 12:30pm Central Time. The train is scheduled to remain in Knox for about 30 to 45 minutes.

According to a press release from the city, the train is expected to stop west of US Highway 35 to Bower Street. Residents and visitors are encouraged to watch for street closure signs and traffic barriers in the area.

City officials anticipate as many as 5,000 visitors throughout the day, beginning in the morning and continuing until after the train departs. Drivers should expect increased traffic congestion, while pedestrians are also expected to be walking throughout the area.

Parking will also be affected during the event. While designated parking areas will be available, on-street parking is expected to be limited. The Knox Community Center parking lot will be reserved for handicap parking on a first-come, first-served basis.

The city is encouraging local businesses to prepare for higher-than-normal customer traffic. Food trucks and vendors will be set up on Main Street near the Starke County Courthouse and at other locations throughout the city from 10am to 4pm.

Mayor Estok also announced that yard sale permit requirements will be waived on July 16 for residents wishing to hold yard sales on that day. Anyone planning to sell food items should contact the Starke County Health Department at 574-772-9137 for guidance.
