The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office has released another update on the recovery of Deputy Jonathon Samuelson, who continues to undergo intensive inpatient rehabilitation following a shooting in late May of this year.
According to the sheriff’s office, Samuelson is participating in several hours of occupational, physical and recreational therapy five to six days each week as he works to regain strength, mobility and independence.
Samuelson was shot after transporting a man he believed to be a stranded motorist to a hospital. Authorities allege the suspect, 22-year-old Sharod L. Grafton of Chicago, shot Samuelson before fleeing the scene. Grafton has since been charged with attempted murder.
Following the shooting, Samuelson was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he underwent approximately eight hours of surgery.
In its latest update, the sheriff’s office said Sheriff Ron Heeg and Administrative Captain Derek Allen recently visited Samuelson during one of his occupational therapy sessions. During the visit, Samuelson completed resistance band and dumbbell exercises designed to improve shoulder strength and mobility. The sheriff’s office also reported that he recently participated in a boxing class during his free time at the rehabilitation facility.
Following therapy, Samuelson, his wife Quinn, Sheriff Heeg and Captain Allen spent time together at the facility. During the visit, Samuelson expressed appreciation for the support he and his family have received from the community. According to the sheriff’s office, he remains grateful for the prayers, messages, donations and other acts of kindness shown throughout his recovery.
The sheriff’s office also said medical professionals have credited Samuelson’s physical condition prior to his injury as one factor contributing to his recovery.
In the update, Samuelson encouraged community members to spend time outdoors and stay active, suggesting activities such as walking, hiking, biking or running.
