Elementary school educators still have an opportunity to register their fourth- and fifth-grade students for this year’s Kankakee River Days environmental education program.
The Starke County and LaPorte County Soil and Water Conservation Districts announced that openings remain for both public and private school classes at the program’s Starke County and La Porte County locations.
Kankakee River Days is a free, hands-on environmental education program that gives students the opportunity to experience the Kankakee River by canoe while learning about water quality, wildlife, soil health, river history and conservation. Organizers said the program is designed to help students better understand and appreciate the natural resources of the Kankakee River Watershed.
The Starke County program is scheduled for September 16th, 17th and 18th at the Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area. The La Porte County program will take place September 21st, 25th and 26th at the Kingsbury Fish and Wildlife Area.
According to the organizers, Kankakee River Days brings together students from throughout the Kankakee River Watershed and is intended to help them build a connection to the watershed while encouraging environmental stewardship.
Teachers interested in registering a class or learning more about the program are encouraged to contact the Starke County or LaPorte County Soil and Water Conservation District educators. Registration information is also available through the districts’ online registration forms.
