With kids spending more time outside during summer break months, the Starke County Sheriff’s Office is reminding both young riders and motorists alike to practice safe habits when it comes to e-bikes and scooters.
In a recent post, the Sheriff’s office noted that more kids are riding e-bikes and scooters countywide as the summer goes on; and that while they provide a fun and convenient way to get around, riders are also urged to use caution and to follow all traffic laws.
According to the post, many e-bikes are capable of traveling between 15 and 28 miles per hour, while some models can reach higher speeds. Parents are encouraged to remind children to stop at stop signs, watch for traffic, and remain alert while riding.
Officials also advised riders using the sidewalks to slow down and watch for pedestrians. A properly fitted helmet is also recommended for riders.
Motorists should also remain vigilant as they travel through communities this summer; drivers are encouraged to look carefully before entering intersections or proceeding through stop signs, and to be aware that children on e-bikes may approach more quickly than expected.
The Sheriff’s Office said a little extra attention from both riders and drivers can help ensure everyone enjoys a safe summer.
