An announcement made by the Pulaski County Drug-Free Council this week shares that the county has a sharps disposal drop box that is now available at the Francesville Fire Department.

The Fire Department is located at 122 East Montgomery Street in Francesville.

The announcement shared that the box provides a free and secure location for residents to dispose of medical sharps, including needles, syringes and lancets. The disposal box is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Before being placed in the drop box, all sharps must be secured inside a puncture-resistant container. Examples include an official biohazard sharps container or a heavy-duty detergent bottle with a sealed lid. Loose needles should not be placed directly into the disposal box.

Residents are asked not to force or jam items into the box and to stop filling sharps containers once they reach their fill line.

Regular trash, paper towels, gloves, additional outer packaging and plastic wrappers should not be placed in the disposal box. Free liquids should also not be poured into sharps containers.

The Drug-Free Council says proper disposal can help protect first responders, sanitation workers and other community members.
