GREENWOOD, Ind. — The Greenwood City Council has cleared the way for a Buc-ee’s to be built near I-65 and Worthsville Road.
The council voted 7-2 Monday night to rezone about 80 acres of land for the project.
Plans call for an $85 million Buc-ee’s with a 74,000-square-foot travel center and 120 fueling and electric vehicle charging stations.
Some Greenwood residents are excited to finally have the popular travel center coming to their community.
One woman says she’s gone out of her way to visit Buc-ee’s in Kentucky.
“I love giving money to my local community and I’d much rather give my Buc-ee’s Bucks to Greenwood than traveling 240 miles and giving it to Kentucky. And I’ve done that on purpose, just to get myself a brisket sandwich.”
But not everyone is happy about the new development.
One Greenwood native says the city is losing part of what makes it unique.
He said, “Greenwood tonight lost its identity. Doesn’t matter what they do in the future to revitalize downtown, it doesn’t matter what festivals they bring in, it doesn’t matter how many sports park they bring. Now Greenwood Indiana will always be known as Buc-ee’s”
Buc-ee’s plans to help pay for about $14 million in road and infrastructure improvements, including a new roundabout at Worthsville Road and Collins Road.
The Greenwood Advisory Plan Commission approved the rezoning proposal in July.
The city council’s vote now clears another major step for the project, with residents on both sides of the development sharing what Buc-ee’s could mean for Greenwood.
