Our reporting partners at WNDU have shared that the Indiana State Police are investigating a police chase that ended in a deadly shooting in Winamac this afternoon.
WNDU reports that a Monon police officer was responding to a disturbance at the VanGuard facility in Monon shortly before 1:30pm today, September 16th. Police said the officer saw a Chevrolet Colorado believed to have been involved in the disturbance and attempted to stop the vehicle.
The driver reportedly did not stop and led officers east on State Road 16 before traveling north on State Road 39 into Pulaski County.
The pursuit continued east on State Road 14, where officers deployed a tire deflation device. Police said the vehicle struck the device but continued into Winamac via State Road 14.
The pursuit eventually stopped near the intersection of Monticello Street and 15th Street in Winamac. According to police, the driver exited the vehicle armed with a gun.
Police believe the driver fired the gun during the encounter, and an officer at the scene is also believed to have fired a weapon. Indiana State Police did not confirm whether the officer’s bullet struck the driver.
The driver was transported to a hospital and later died. The driver’s identity has not been released.
Indiana State Police detectives are investigating the incident.
