The Starke County Council is expected to hear more about a proposal that could provide bicycles to second grade students throughout the county.
During its meeting on Friday, council members were told local schools have previously participated in a Bikes for Kids program that provides bicycles at a discounted price. Officials said the program has generally invited families receiving assistance to sign up, but some children have missed out when their families did not participate.
The schools are now exploring whether county solar funds could potentially be used to expand the program to second graders throughout the county. An estimated $22,500 could provide bicycles for approximately 225 students, at about $100 per bicycle.
Council members expressed interest in learning more about the proposal while also raising questions about bicycle safety and potential county liability.
The council agreed to invite representatives to a future meeting to provide additional information about the proposal. No funding was voted on or approved during the discussion.
