The Knox Board of Works took action concerning three properties during its meeting Wednesday, October 28th, including authorizing court proceedings, imposing a civil penalty, and granting additional time for cleanup.
The board voted to move forward with filing a court complaint concerning an unsafe structure on Main Street. Officials reported that a $10,000 civil penalty had been issued the previous month, but the required improvements had not been completed. The city’s attorney explained that court proceedings could eventually allow the city to intervene if the property owner fails to comply.
On West Locust Street, the board approved a $5,000 civil penalty for ongoing property violations. Officials reported that notices dating back to 2020 had been issued concerning accumulated garbage and other items. The property owner was given 15 days to complete the cleanup before city crews may intervene, with costs billed to the owner.
The board also held a public hearing concerning property violations on South Brooklyn Street. Although a $5,000 civil penalty was recommended, the property owner attended the hearing and requested additional time, explaining that a dumpster had been arranged for delivery and that there had been difficulties receiving notices through the mail.
The board granted an additional 30 days for cleanup, with the property’s progress to be reviewed at the next Board of Works meeting.
