The Starke County Commissioners tabled discussion Monday night on a proposed four-year extension of the county’s agreement with the City of Knox for Knox City Court.
The Starke County Council and Commissioners previously came to an agreement to move forward with an extension, with officials saying the additional four years would give the county and city time to determine the long-term future of the court. Options discussed included continuing the current arrangement or transitioning cases to the county court system.
During Monday’s discussion, officials said additional time would be needed if the county ultimately decides to take over the City Court caseload. The discussion included the possibility of adding a magistrate and additional support staff, though no decision has been made on what would eventually replace the current arrangement, if anything.
County Attorney Justin Schramm told commissioners that because he also represents the City of Knox, the Commissioners would need to waive that conflict if they want him to prepare an addendum extending the agreement for another four years. He said the Commissioners could also choose to use another attorney.
Commissioners ultimately voted to table the matter. Officials indicated the city was hoping to have the matter addressed in October.
No extension was approved Monday night.
