Starke County Council President Bill R. Crase Jr., passed away Sunday, October 18th, at the age of 53. Crase left behind a legacy of public service that spans local government, emergency services, and community development.
Crase, a graduate of North Judson-San Pierre High School, served the community in several capacities throughout his life, including as chief of the North Judson-Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department, Starke County Surveyor, treasurer of the Kankakee River Basin and Yellow River Basin Development Commissions, and as president of the Starke County Council.
The North Judson-Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department shared a tribute to Crase, recognizing his 20 years of service with the department and his dedication to mentoring new members. According to the department, Crase played a vital role in securing funding and overseeing construction of the community’s new fire station. The department remembered him for his dedication, leadership, and willingness to share his knowledge with others.
Crase was also involved in efforts to develop a community center in North Judson. Local news in 2016 documented his work with project organizers to pursue grant funding, evaluate potential locations, and develop plans for a facility that could serve local organizations and residents. During a public hearing that year, Crase discussed how a community center could provide space for events while also benefiting local businesses by bringing visitors into town.
His service as Starke County Surveyor included work involving local waterways, drainage, and flood recovery.
In March 2018, following significant flooding in the region, Crase appeared before the Kankakee River Basin Commission to request funding for emergency repair work. That same month, Crase reported to commission members on a Yellow River bank stabilization pilot project, emphasizing the importance of involving local businesses in future projects.
Crase also worked to modernize records in the Starke County Surveyor’s Office. In 2018, he discussed plans to digitally scan county plat books to preserve the original documents.
His public service continued with his election to the Starke County Council. Crase was sworn in as an at-large council member on December 28, 2024, and went on to serve as council president.
Beyond his public roles, Crase’s obituary remembers him as a devoted husband, father, and friend who enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly hunting with his son.
He is survived by his wife, Brenna, his son, Brayden, his parents, siblings, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Brittany Rae Crase.
Visitation will be held today, Thursday, October 22nd, from 4pm to 7pm Central Time at O’Donnell Funeral Home in North Judson. Funeral services will take place Friday, October 23rd, at 11am Central Time at Calvary Baptist Church in Knox, with visitation beginning at 9am. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
