If you’ve thought about running for office, the Community Foundation of Pulaski County is offering a program to help you through the process.
A seminar called “So, You Want to be An Elected Official?” is planned for Thursday, October 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. EDT.
Pulaski County Clerk JoLynn Behny is one of the presenters. “There will be speakers and workshops, and I’ll have, you know, ‘These are the forms that you have to fill out,’” she told the rest of the county election board last week. “The 2022 election calendar is out already.”
The community foundation says participants will learn about election laws, what offices are available, the role of party chairs, and how to raise funds and get the word out. A panel of elected officials and Democratic and Republican Party representatives will answer questions. Community Foundation Executive Director Wendy Rose said in a press release that the event is unprecedented in recent times.
There’s already been some interest in next year’s elections. Behny told the election board that four candidates had filed paperwork for exploratory committees, allowing them to start advertising. Board members were particularly excited to see younger people looking to run.
“We need more of this,” Behny said.
“Yeah, I think we need younger people,” added Election Board Chair Patty Sullivan.
Next month’s “So, You Want to be An Elected Official?” will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at 77 East 50 North in Winamac. It’s free and open to the public, but registration is required by contacting 574-946-0906 or info@cfopc.org.
The event is part of the Community Foundation of Pulaski County’s Forward Thinking Leadership Initiative.
