Preston Hansel 9/20/14

Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Preston Hansel, a member of the Football Team at Culver High School.

Preston is the first ever recipient of this award for an outstanding performance in a losing effort, but his effort in the Class 1-A Cavaliers 56-33 loss to Class 4-A 11th-ranked New Prairie was one for the record books!

The 6-1, 185-pound Quarterback led his team in virtually every statistical category on both sides of the ball. He was 13-of-32 in passing for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed the ball 38-times for 241 yards and 2 more touchdowns and scored on a 2-point conversion attempt as the Cavaliers jumped out to a first quarter lead as the Cav’s beat the powerful Cougars in virtually every statistical category except for the one on the scoreboard.

Not only did the veteran Senior account for 475 of his team’s 491 total offensive yards and 26 of the team’s 33 points, but he led the defense in tackles from his strong safety position with 5 plus an assist and a tackle for loss!

While the team lost, Preston showed great Senior leadership in turning in one of the greatest, if not THE greatest individual performance ever seen at Culver High School!

Preston is the son of Amy and Scott Hansel and will be featured next week here on the “Saturday Sportsline with Nathan Welter” on K99.3 and will have a featured picture and story on wkvi.com.

Congratulations to Preston Hansel of Culver High School, our “Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week”

While the weather conditions didn’t allow her to come close to her season-best time of 21:10, Justene was helped by teammates Dana Wherrett in 2nd place and Erin O’Connor in 6th to score 36 points, beating out Gary West with 43 and Knox with 60.

Just a Freshman, Justene also is looking forward to participating in basketball and track for the Lady Tigers this year.

Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Mavrick Pitts, a member of the Football Team at North Judson-San Pierre High School.

Mavrick led his team to a 40-14 victory over arch-rival Knox with outstanding play on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the 5-10, 173-pound running back accounted for 22 of his teams points, rushing for 3 second-half touchdowns that turned a close game into a route. His 14 and 10 yard scores were topped by a 70-yard sprint for a score as he carried the ball 12 times for 164 yards.

In addition, the veteran Senior kicked 2 extra points and ran for a 2-point conversion as the Jays evened their record at 1-1.

Defensively Mavrick was the second leading tackler on the squad with 5 stops.

Mavrick will be featured next week here on the “Saturday Sportsline with Nathan Welter” on K99.3 and will have a featured picture and story on wkvi.com.

Congratulations to Mavrick Pitts of North Judson-San Pierre High School, our “Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week”

Parker Fritz 8/30/14

Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Parker Fritz, a member of the Football Team at West Central High School.

Parker led his team to a 34-0 upset of the Culver Cavaliers on opening night of the new season, helping his team send a resounding statement to their former Head Coach, Darren Rodriguez, now the Coach of the Cavaliers, and giving the Trojans new Head Coach, Marc Hall, his first win at West Central.

The 5-9, 170-pound Senior had a career night on both sides of the ball. On offense, he carried the ball 16 times for 242 yards and three touchdowns and also picked up 34 yards on a pass reception.

On defense, Parker again showed great leadership with 6 tackles, including one for loss, one for a quarterback sack and one that forced a fumble!

Volunteers Needed to Spruce Up Tippecanoe River State Park

If the brutal winter has you itching to get outdoors, head to Tippecanoe River State Park this weekend for the third annual volunteer day. Assistant manager Jason Hickman says gate fees will be waived for anyone who comes out to lend a hand. Volunteer activities will start at 10 a.m. EDT at the Nature Center. The big goal is to build a second scenic overlook. The Friends of Tippecanoe River State Park nonprofit organization replaced one last year after securing donations and volunteers to do so. Hickman says they’ve secured money for the other one. Weather permitting he says the goal is to get it framed and decked out. That’s the main project for the weekend, but Hickman says it’s not the only one. Volunteers are also needed to clean and spruce up the Nature Center and remove invasive plants and some small trees from the waterfowl dam. Bird feeders also need to be hung up. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and cordless drills, if possible, and wear long pants and sturdy shoes.
