Kersting’s Cycle Center and Museum has a plethora of fun things to look forward to this coming weekend. To start it all off, Starke County A.B.A.T.E will be hosting its Autumn Slam, a two-day event that begins Friday when gates open at 7 p.m. EST. The event is open to anyone 21 or older and the cost is $15 dollars per person. That fee grants access to food, bike games, field events, entertainment and primitive camping on Friday and Saturday. Over 300 Resident Signatures Received in Favor of Amending NJ Animal Ordinance
Although a petition was presented during the North Judson City Council’s regular session, no further action was taken on the animal ordinance. The Council members say further research must be done before any changes can be made.
Knox School Board to Discuss Rescheduling October Meeting
The Knox School Board will meet Wednesday evening in the administrative office to first discuss litigation matters and individual employee evaluations in a private executive session, followed by the regular session at 6:30 p.m.
The main business item on the agenda is moving the first meeting in October due to a scheduling conflict with a conference that a number of board members are set to attend. The board is anticipated to hear from administrators about how the eLearning test day went on Friday, September 1st. Continue reading
Starke County Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing Coming Soon!
The annual Starke County Chamber’s Golf Outing is coming up soon and it isn’t too late to get involved. Join the Chamber on Friday Sept. 15 at the Hamlet Golf Course. The event is not limited to members only, anyone can play.

ISDH Begins Toxicology Pilot Program to Improve Coroner Consistency in the State
The Center for Disease control said that Indiana is one of the three worst states for overdose fatality reports because of inconsistencies in the way coroners test and fill out death certificates. In an effort to improve that reporting, the Indiana State Department of Health’s Division of Trauma and Injury Prevention launched a toxicology pilot program that works with coroners and allows them to order either a basic or more comprehensive panel. Local Red Cross Volunteer Heading to Houston
A local woman who volunteered during past natural disasters such as the Henryville Tornado and Hurricane Sandy will be deploying to Houston this weekend to assist the Red Cross with mass care efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Sherry Fagner is a former Incident Management Team member of the District 2 Task Force who now serves as the Lead Disaster Action Team member for Pulaski and Starke Counties. Fagner will be providing assistance in one of the mega centers that has been set up in the Houston area. Continue reading

Gas prices may be up 24 cents from last year’s average but compared to individuals on the east coast, drivers in Indiana won’t be seeing much of an impact from Hurricane Harvey at the pump. North Judson-San Pierre Program in Place to Assist Student Achievement
A program implemented this school year allows 7th and 8th grade students at North Judson-San Pierre more time to study the subjects of language-arts and math. The 7th and 8th Grade Academy is approximately 70 minutes of Math and 70 minutes of English class daily. The students sit through the length of a regular class session and then an additional 20-25 minutes is allotted for teachers to engage with students in more detail. Continue reading

Knox School Teachers, Students to Test eLearning System
Knox Community School teachers and students will not be in the classroom on Friday. Sept. 1st in order to test the school’s new eLearning system. Teachers will post classroom assignments to the learning management system Canvas by 9 a.m. that morning.
Denney Street Fire Extinguished Within Minutes
A small fire broke out in a home in the 1000 Block of Denney Street, yesterday evening. The Knox Police Department was the first on the scene and reported seeing smoke. The fire department received the call at 5:47 p.m. and rushed to the home in the Binkley subdivision. The fire was contained to the kitchen and was extinguished within 5 minutes. Starke County EMS assisted at the scene and fortunately no injuries were reported.
Starke County Sheriff’s Office Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative
The Starke County Sheriff’s Office will be working with community members to combat prescription drug abuse with their Prescription Drug Take-Back event today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Prescription pills that sit in your medicine cabinet or around your home can be susceptible to theft, misuse and abuse. To prevent these types of crimes, the Sheriff’s Office is asking individuals to bring in potentially dangerous, expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs. Continue reading

Ancilla College Helps to Develop Management & Leadership Training Program
When Marshall County employers were recently interviewed on workforce development issues, it was discovered that training is one of the biggest needs for workers in the area.
