Starke County will mark its place in Indiana history today when the state bicentennial torch comes through the county. Celebration coordinator Dave Pearman says the intent of the 92 county torch relay and yearlong observance is to have every Hoosier take part in the festivities. The torch will come up U.S. 35 from Pulaski into Starke County around 4:30 p.m. CDT and will be shepherded through 20 marked spots by prominent members of the community or their representatives. The Knox School Board has ratified its master teacher agreement with some teachers seeing a bit of a bump in salary.
During Monday’s School Board meeting, it was noted that Knox teachers have not seen a salary increase in about three years. That is largely explained by declining enrollment in rural school corporations in past years.
The Starke County Highway Department has parlayed available federal and state funds into significant road improvements. Superintendent Rik Ritzler told the county commissioners Monday the county was awarded more than $1 million in Federal Highway Administration construction funds to replace the bridge on 1200 East across the Yellow River. The Pulaski County Commissioners want another appraisal on farmland planned for sale to help fund the acquisition of property for a rail-served industrial park on the west side.
Starke County residents are preparing for a celebration 200 years in the making. The Indiana Bicentennial Torch will travel up U.S. 35 from Pulaski into Starke County around 5:30 p.m. tomorrowevening, according to the schedule posted on the state’s website. Starke is the 76th of Indiana’s 92 counties the torch is visiting on its 3,200 mile journey. Continue reading
Starke County poll workers are encouraged to attend tomorrow’s vote machine testing if possible to familiarize themselves with the technology. Vendor MicroVote will test the electronic machines at 1 p.m. outside the clerk’s office at the Starke County Courthouse. Members of the public are also welcome to come see how the ballot will appear and how the machines work. Continue reading
The Starke County Commissioners have recommended a funding source for a new ambulance, and now it’s up to the county council to act. EMS Director Keith Emigh says the trucks in his fleet range from 1998 with a 1988 box to a problem-free 2013 rig with 58,000 miles. A 2003 ambulance with 167,000 miles and a 2009 truck with a history of mechanical problems round out the fleet.
Pulaski County has signed an agreement that will allow them to access money received through INDOT’s Community Crossings grant program.
The Oregon-Davis School Corporation is working to identify a few items in their buildings that will require future replacement.
Following last Monday’s school board meeting, members toured the school corporation to discuss what should be included in a future “Strategic Plan.” The goal is to estimate the cost of replacing items essential to operating the schools, and estimating their lifespan.
