The Indiana Lieutenant Governor’s office announced the winner of this year’s Indiana Stellar Community designation, and a local community just missed out on the top prize.

Knox Mayor Dennis Estok reports that progress continues on the demolition of the blighted house at 108 Allen Drive that the city recently acquired. The Knox Street Department has been working since Monday to tear down the structure on the property. The city hopes to have the work completed within the next week. Photos provided.
The Knox City Police Department has funds lined up to buy a patrol vehicle for their K-9 officer. Mayor Dennis Estok says the Chevrolet Tahoe to accommodate the dog and equipment carries a price tag of about $40,000. Last week the Knox Redevelopment Commission pledged $20,000 from the Tax Increment Financing account toward the purchase. The council’s share of the money will come from the city’s share of riverboat gambling proceeds and the Economic Development Income Tax fund. Continue reading

Sheriff Jeff Richwine filled the Pulaski County Council in on an incident involving one of their deputies and the Starke County K-9 unit. The incident occurred on August 1st when officers were pursuing an assailant on a four-wheeler.

The Town of Culver is looking to purchase a new ambulance to combat a slightly aging fleet.
A committee is working to identify the best ambulance for Culver in the future. Specification options have been gathered by the group, but the changes from the current ambulance to the new purchase are pretty limited according to Tuesday night’s discussion.
The Knox Water Department will be flushing fire hydrants tomorrow morning to clear water lines. Superintendent Todd Gardner says crews will be in the Carlson Subdivision. Star Court, Henry Drive, Airway Drive and Carlson will all be affected. Continue reading
Indiana State Police say they spent 12 months piecing together the information necessary to formally charge former Pulaski County Sheriff Michael Gayer and Chief Deputy Ronnie Patrick.
The City of Knox has a few options to pay for upgrades to their aging wastewater treatment plant.
One involves applying for a $600,000 grant from the state Office of Community and Rural Affairs, which requires a $1.3 million local match. The second option is a combination grant and loan from the U.S.D.A. Rural Development program. Engineer Chirag Patel with Jones Petrie Rafinski told the city council the project must be formally submitted in order to receive consideration for a 45 percent U.S.D.A. grant. Continue reading
Discussion of security at the Pulaski County Courthouse carried over from the joint session into the County Council meeting, Monday night.
Knox Mayor Dennis Estok says the city can do a better job with code enforcement. Efforts have been stepped up recently to address unsafe buildings. During Monday evening’s town hall meeting, Estok said structures that can’t be rehabilitated are ordered to be torn down.
So far four houses have been razed with money from a blight elimination grant. Another four are under contract for demolition, and the city is seeking approval for two more. Continue reading
Marshall County will soon be home to a new, state-of-the-art INDOT maintenance facility. State and local officials broke ground yesterday on the $7.2 million project on Pioneer Drive north of U.S. 30. It will serve as a base of operations and salt building for the Plymouth Sub District. INDOT Statewide Director of Facilities Management Steve McAvoy says the existing facility dates to 1978 and is no longer capable of meeting the agency’s needs with regard to maintaining roads during the winter months. A crash in LaPorte County Tuesday morning has claimed a life.
The Knox City Council will conduct a public hearing on a proposed grant application at the start of their meeting tonight. The city is applying for a $600,000 community development block grant from the state Office of Community and Rural Affairs to pay for upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant. Much of the infrastructure there is more than 20 years old. The grant carries an anticipated local match of $1.3 million. Continue reading

During a joint session of the Pulaski County Council and Commissioners, County Clerk Christi Hoffa revisited an issue that looks to improve communication and enhance the safety of the employees.
