Bass Lake Festival Pageant Results
The winners of last weekend’s Bass Lake Festival Pageant walked away cash prizes as well as other gifts. Friends and family gathered at the Bass Lake Property Owners Association building over the weekend to witness this year’s Bass Lake Festival Pageant.
The title of Little Miss Bass Lake went to 4-year-old Leah Novotney. Her mini escort was 4-year-old Isaiah Allsop who was granted the title of Little Mister Bass Lake. Both lucky little winners received $50 each. Stephanie Thompson was the pageant coordinator for the 3 to 6 category.
Starke County Commissioners Attempting to Buy Old Landfill Site
The Starke County Commissioners are going to offer the owner of the former county landfill site what they believe is a fair price for the 22-acre property. The landfill on 750 East just north of State Road 10 has been closed for several years but is still subject to Indiana Department of Environmental Management monitoring to ensure levels of methane gas are in compliance. North Judson Council Sets Budget Workshop
Members of the North Judson Town Council will meet Thursday, July 31 at 8 a.m. at the community center to work on the 2015 budget. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry says that meeting is open to the public. The initial hearing on the spending proposal will take place Monday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. at the community center. A final adoption date has not been set yet pending a non-binding review by the Starke County Council. That’s new this year and will take place sometime in October. Starke County is part of a pilot program for that process.

INDOT Announces LaPorte County Road Project
Lanes on U.S. 35/Pine Lake Avenue between State Road 39 and the bridge over the railroad in downtown LaPorte will be restricted for the next few nights so road repairs can be made. Bridge Repair To Start Today on 700 East
A LaPorte-based contractor will begin repairs on the bridge over the Yellow River on County Road 700 East today. It’s been closed since a tree floating down the river struck one of the bridge supports earlier this year, rendering the structure unstable. Continue reading

A Goshen resident faces numerous charges in Marshall County after a traffic stop and subsequent arrest late Friday night. LaPorte Police Respond to Report of Unsupervised Child
LaPorte Police responded Saturday afternoon to a home in the 100 block of Whispering Boulevard when the homeowner found an unattended 4-year-old boy trying to get into her swimming pool. Starke County Commissioners Weighing Beach Options
The Starke County Commissioners will have some pointed questions for Bass Lake Beach and Campground Manager Richard Callahan and his attorney, David Wallsmith, when they meet tonight. They attend the evening meetings each month and give a management report. Unemployment Rate Improving
The unemployment rate for Starke County stands at 6.6 percent which ranks the county 27th in the state.
Pulaski County rose .3 percent in June to 5.0, Marshall County was up .2 percent to 5.7 percent with LaPorte County up to 7.5 percent with a .1 percent increase.
INDOT to Close SR 23 for Chip Sealing
Motorists who take State Road 23 through Walkerton will need to find a new route for the next few days. INDOT is closing the road between U.S. 30 and U.S. 6 to perform chip and fog sealing. The process preserves the road surface. INDOT officials stress the work is dependent on dry weather and may be delayed if conditions are not ideal. Southbound motorists can take U.S. 6 south to U.S. 35 and east to U.S. 30 to get around the closure. Northbound motorists can use the opposite route. Continue reading
N.J.-S.P. Revises Budget Adoption Calendar
The North Judson-San Pierre School Board has revised its budget adoption calendar. The corporation was selected as part of a state pilot program and as a result cannot adopt a budget until Oct. 15. The Starke County Council will conduct a public hearing on Monday, Aug. 18 on the school corporation’s general, debt, pension and transportation funds. The next day the school board will meet in special session to adopt the 2015 Capital Projects Fund and Bus Replacement Plan. Continue reading
Two Day Closure of U.S. 6 Near Bremen
Marshall County motorists should practice caution when traveling on U.S. 6 in the coming days. Beginning Monday, July 21 through the end of the day on Tuesday, July 22 crews will perform chip and fog seal operations to preserve the road surface between the east junction and west junction of State Road 106 near Bremen. Drivers wishing to travel either eastbound or westbound on U.S. 6 should take State Road 106 until it meets back with U.S. 6.

Local Kids Compete in the Bass Lake Pageant Today
The Bass Lake Festival is next weekend and but the fun starts early this weekend with the annual pageant.
Boys and girls from ages 3 to 6 will be competing for the title of Little Miss or Little Mister Bass Lake. Ladies from the ages of 14 to 18 are vying for the title of Miss Bass Lake.
The pageants are this afternoon at the Bass Lake Property Owner’s Association Building. Contestants must be there at 3 p.m. Doors open to the public at 4 p.m for the Little Miss and Little Mister Bass Lake Pageant and the Miss Bass Lake Pageant starts at 6 p.m.

Police Dog Finds Drugs During Early Morning Traffic Stop
An early morning traffic stop on U.S. 31 at the intersection of U.S. 6 in Marshall County lands two men in jail after a police dog reportedly indicated the presence of drugs in the car. Marshall County Police found nearly 150 grams of marijuana and several items of contraband in the car, according to a department news release. The driver, Cory Schieblhut, 25, of Mishawaka, and passenger, Kasey Correll, 25, were both arrested. Schieblhut is charged with possession of marijuana with a prior charge and possession of hash. Correll faces charges of dealing in marijuana, possession of marijuana with a prior charge and possession of a controlled substance.
