Knox Announces Trick-or-Treat Hours but Cancels Costume Contest

The City of Knox is moving ahead with trick-or-treating but is urging residents to take precautions against COVID-19. Mayor Dennis Estok announced Thursday that trick-or-treat hours will be Saturday, October 31 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. But the costume judging normally held at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center sponsored by Starke County A.B.A.T.E. has been canceled.

Winamac Park Board to Continue Pickleball Discussion, Get Update on Bridge Lighting

The Winamac pickleball debate is expected to continue during tonight’s park board meeting. To accommodate growing demand, pickleball players want the shared tennis and pickleball court at the Town Park to be re-equipped exclusively for pickleball. But some of the park board members wanted more time to look into options for keeping tennis somewhere in the park.

New Home Planned for Vacant Hamlet Lot

Home design submitted by Finish Line Construction for Hamlet property

A new home may finally be coming to a vacant lot in Hamlet. For months, the town council has been trying to get a home built on a piece of town-owned land at Lincoln and Pearl streets. Last week, council members agreed to sell the lot to Finish Line Construction. The company plans to build a 1,700-square-foot, three-bedroom home in the next six to nine months. Winamac Town Council Approves Rezoning for Vander Haag’s Expansion

A Winamac truck repair business’s expansion plans recently cleared a procedural hurdle with the town council. Town Manager Brad Zellers told council members that Vander Haag’s planned to purchase the neighboring property to the south, to add onto the current facility. The town council approved the business’s request to rezone the parcel from residential to light industrial.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Adjusts Pay Structure for Substitute Teachers

The Eastern Pulaski School Board has adjusted the pay structure for substitute teachers. Board members approved the change this month, at the recommendation of Superintendent Dara Chezem. “Our sub pay is extremely difficult to track, based on the current policy,” she explained. “Currently, subs get paid one rate for their days one to 20 and then another rate for days 20 plus, and that’s not consecutive days.”

Knox Board of Works to Consider Additional Penalties on 6 North Pearl Street

The Knox Board of Works will consider additional penalties against the owner of 6 North Pearl Street today. The board had called for the home’s demolition back in 2016 but later agreed to give the owner a chance to fix the issues. Board members will also get updates on 253 East Washington Street, 8 South Main Street, and 204 West Bender Street.
