Results Released from Recent DUI Task Force Sobriety Checkpoints

 The LaPorte County DUI Task Force conducted three sobriety checkpoints in the evening hours of Aug. 29.

Members from the task force and a Sergeant from the Indiana State Police Lowell District were at three separate locations to help deter impaired driving and remove impaired drivers from roadways.

The results found that of the 210 vehicles stopped during the sobriety checkpoints one person was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, three citations were given and 12 warnings were issued. Woman Airlifted after Two Vehicle Accident

 
 

A Rochester woman was injured in a two vehicle accident Tuesday night.

According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, a teenaged Plymouth resident was traveling north on Michigan Road north of 15th Road and turning left into a driveway behind another vehicle. Judy Pritchett, 50, of Rochester was traveling south on Michigan Road and was struck in the driver’s side by the teenager’s vehicle.

Enrollment Down at Knox Schools

Knox-School-Board-2014The first tally of the fall 2014 student enrollment at the Knox schools shows a drop of some 50 students from the previous year at the same time. Superintendent A.J. Gappa reported to last night’s meeting of the school board the loss of student attendance was across all grade levels. An officiall tally is scheduled later this month which will determine the state’s financial reimbursement to the schools.

Authorities Investigating Botched Marshall County Landing

Authorities are investigating the botched landing of a small airplane at the Marshall County Airport on Sunday night. WSBT-TV reports the pilot was blinded by the sun as he was coming in for a landing around 8 p.m. The plane skidded across Lilac Road and stopped in a grassy area near the airport. The pilot was treated at a local hospital for a minor eye injury. No other injuries were reported.

Road Salt Prices are Saltier this Year

 Knox Street Department Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Board of Public Works members recently that the price of road salt went up about 50 percent this year.

Borg said the city gets 150 ton of salt and it will cost the city $73.32 a ton in an annual agreement with the state co-op. Last year, the price of road salt was $48.84 and the cost was $7,300. This year the city will be paying $11,000.

Contractors Needed for Home Repairs for City Grant Project

  
 

The City of Knox is looking for contractors to bid on repairs on homes through the Area 5 program.

Five roofing jobs were awarded to companies in LaPorte and Logansport and now local contractors are urged to bid on homes that need electrical repairs, plumbing repairs and general contracting repairs. The city has secured grant money and are waiting for companies to bid on the projects.

City Officials to Start Comprehensive Plan Talks

  
 

The Knox City Council will be meeting tomorrow at 5 p.m. CT to discuss items for a comprehensive plan.

The two hour meeting will gather ideas for the downtown area and for the TIF District. The council members discussed the need for a new plan for the TIF District last week as the current plan is really outdated. The two plans may come together to move forward plans for the downtown area.

The meeting will be held at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox.

Starke County Commissioners to Revisit Employee Work Restrictions

starke-county-courthouseThe Starke County Commissioners have asked the county attorney to look into work restrictions for county employees who have been cleared to return to work by their physicians but are still under restrictions. Interim EMS Director Keith Emigh asked about the county’s policy during the most recent regular commissioners meeting and was told employees cannot return to work unless they can perform all of their required job duties. The commissioners last week asked county attorney Marty Lucas to further research the issue and placed the matter on the agenda for their meeting this morning. Continue reading
