The Monterey Elementary School is in its final day as a location for learning in the Culver School District. Beginning next school year, the students will be transported to Culver as part of a cost cutting measure.
In 1968, Monterey was consolidated into the Culver Community School District and was turned into a stand-alone elementary school.
While there is no snow forecast today, on June 2nd, 1910, there were snow flurries throughout the Midwest. No measurable snow, but some flurries were. That made it the latest in the season snow was ever seen in this part of the Midwest.
LaPorte City Police Department officers arrested Robert Reed, 33, of LaPorte, after a police pursuit. Reed is also suspected of being involved in a theft and pursuit incident in San Pierre on May 22nd.
According to Detective Andy Hynek of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, Reed was spotted in the LaPorte City limits on Friday, May 27th in a suspected stolen vehicle from Starke County. LaPorte City officers initiated a traffic stop and Reed would not pull over. A pursuit began and he was eventually taken into custody. He was arrested on charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle, Resisting Law Enforcement, and Habitual Traffic Violator. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department has also filed charges on Reed which include four counts of Theft and one count of Burglary. The LaPorte County charges stem from a two month investigation in which Reed was allegedly involved in the act of stealing trailers, vehicles, RVs and tools.
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department and Winamac City Police officers have arrested a suspect in burglary incidents at Ace Hardware in Winamac. According to court documents, Jeffery Adams, 36, of Monon, was arrested on May 27th and has been charged with two counts of Burglary and two counts of Theft.
Adams is suspected to have broken into Ace Hardware on multiple occasions and stole XBox systems, 12 iPod devices, three XBox Kinect systems, two PS3 systems, a Wii game console, and a tool set. The stolen items totaled more than $4,000. Adams allegedly broke into the Ace Hardware on March 19th, March 21st and on May 12th. An anonymous tip led to his arrest.
A Culver woman was arrested on Thursday, May 26th after a Star City couple found an her sleeping on their couch without any pants.
According to the police report, Kelly Patterson told police that she was involved in an accident and started walking until she found a residence. She found that the residence on S. Judson Street in Star City was unlocked so she walked in and went to sleep. Patterson’s pants were found on the back porch of the residence where police found drug paraphernalia and several blister packs containing pseudoephedrine tablets which is a key ingredient in the manufacture of methamphetamine. Police also reportedly found a small plastic bag containing methamphetamine in the couch where she was reportedly sleeping. She was arrested on charges of Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Paraphernalia and Residential Entry.
The staff at the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department and the public attended a Memorial Service yesterday to remember and honor the three officers who were killed in the line of duty while employed at the Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Michael Gayer presided over the service. Continue reading
Students from the SCILL Center recently graduated and one of the students in the class of 2011 is Darren Harrell of Plymouth, who not only graduated with honors from the Automotive Certification Program, but did well in national competition.
“I’ve been trying for some scholarships from Lincoln Tech which is the college I’ll be attending,” said Harrell. “They had an acceptance test there where 1,200 kids took it and I was in the top 20. I got an $8,000 scholarship for that. If it wasn’t for the SCILL Center, I probably wouldn’t have done as well on the test.”
Approximately 30% of women and 20% of men will have varicose veins in their lifetime.
According to Dr. Mangalore Subbarao, varicose veins are dilated and twisted veins in the legs that look like a snake under the skin. Not to be mistaken for spider veins, varicose veins are much more pronounced and can come with burning pain and swelling. In the past, varicose veins were treated by a method called stripping. This technique involved removal of the vein through a cutting method. Hooks are used to pull the vein out of the leg.
A Culver man died in a Friday night accident in Lake County. The accident occurred on U.S. 30. Aaron Broeker, 27, died from blunt force trauma at around 11:15 p.m. CT when the motorcycle he was riding slammed into the rear of a car driven by a Cedar Lake resident.
Another motorcyclist was riding with Broeker at the time of the accident.
Broeker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rumors have floated around Starke County for the past few weeks that construction of the Sysco plant near Hamlet is about to become a reality. Starke County Economic Development Director, Charles Weaver, cautions that he has not received any information that supports those rumors.
Even though the weather hasn’t cooperated much with many outdoor projects this spring so far, the construction of the Koontz Lake Dam project seems to be on schedule.
Work is being done to replace the Koontz Lake Dam and straighten out the curve in the road that passes over the dam on State Road 23. According to officials, work is about 15% complete and work will begin on the piers for the new bridge soon. The project is expected to be complete in May of 2012.
One of the most important pieces of legislation passed in the most current session of the legislature had to do with mint farming. Republican Representative Tom Dermody was the sponsor of the legislation and he talks about that bill today.
“When we saw what happened last summer, especially with what I consider is the overreaching of government into business, when mint farming and agricultural is so important to LaPorte and Counties, I put legislation together that will protect the mint farmers,” said Dermody. “It was protect them, especially during this season, against the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and allow them to plant while testing goes on to check for VOCs in the mint farming industry which we already know the mint farmers will pass. This does not allow them to regulate any new permitting on them and will protect them through the season. What the State has to realize is how important mint farmers are to our revenue source, jobs and to agriculture in general. This is something that was supported by many and it protects the overreaching arm of government.”
The employees of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department will be remembering their fallen comrades in a Sheriff’s Memorial service today at Noon ET at the Sheriff’s Department.
Honored will be Sheriff Charles Henry Oglesby, Sheriff Milo “Mike” Lewis and Deputy Sheriff Shadron Kiley “Shad” Bassett. These officers were killed in the line of duty while serving the citizens of Pulaski County.
All are invited to the service.
The West Central School Board recognized staff members for their many years of service to the School Corporation.
Lisa Marlatt and Cathy Risner were recognized for 15 years; Mike Harter, Pam Ledford and Monica Franscoviak for 20 years; Diana Culp for 25 years; Darla Tanner for 30 years; Susan Gift and Carol Tanner for 35 years; and Jennifer Garten for 40 years. Susan Gift, Keith Schladenhauffen, Susan Overton and Peggy Harris opted to retire after this school year and were also recognized.
It was 10 years ago on this date that the 1943 addition of the Knox Middle School started to be torn down. It was removed to make room for the new two story building that is now used for Middle School classrooms.
A train excursion from North Judson to LaCrosse almost turned deadly yesterday when five cars of the train derailed. The cars were being pulled by the historic 765 steam engine when the cars suddenly left the track.
Mark Knebel from the Hoosier Valley Railroad Organization talked about the mishap.
The Knox VFW Post #748 will be hosting Memorial Day services until Noon on Monday, May 30th, where the the closing ceremonies and the retiring of the guard will be held at the Post Home. Several veterans, firefighters, police officers, and National Guard members will be standing vigil at the Post and a Civil War camp will be set up in the back of the facility.
Memorial Day Services in the Kankakee Valley began Sunday at the Knox VFW Post 748. The posting of the guard ceremonies began at 12:00 noon. Speakers included Tim Shepherd of the VFW, Dewayne Arndt, representing Congressman Joe Donnelly, State Representative Nancy Dembowski, and Knox Mayor Rick Chambers.
J.W. Hicks, Inc., with locations in both Knox and Merrillville, has announced plans to proceed with two expansions in Knox while continuing the operation in Merrillville. The company has been in Knox since 1998 and these expansions will mark the third and fourth such expansions since the plant has been in Knox.
The Knox City Police Department is investigating a burglary at the ALCO store in the Knox Mall.
According to police, on Tuesday, May 24th, officers were called to ALCO in reference to a burglary. Officers arrived on scene and found the glass in the south entry door broken out. The K9 unit was sent inside but no suspects were found in the store. Police found that a glass case containing video game systems was broken and game systems were stolen. When police reviewed the security tape, officers saw the suspect was wearing a ski mask, gloves and a hooded sweatshirt at the time of the incident and could not identify him.
