Concerns about hepatitis have Pulaski County vaccinating its maintenance staff.
The county commissioners agreed Tuesday to cover the cost of hepatitis shots for maintenance workers, at the request of Maintenance Supervisor Jeff Johnston.
“My folks work in the jail all the time,” he explained. “We’re back in the cell blocks. We’re in the kitchen. There’s always maintenance to do over there, things to fix. And there is a presence of hepatitis in the jail.” Continue reading
During the public input portion of the Winamac Park Board meeting Thursday evening, Louise Gudas talked to the board about further additions to the skate park.
Louise is the mother of Clark Gudas, the Eagle Scout who was instrumental in the construction of the Winamac Skate Park. The final step left to complete the project is installing the recognition bricks that display the names of those who contributed funds for building the skate park. Continue reading
A recent multi-jurisdictional law enforcement effort in Pulaski County resulted in several citations and arrests.
The Indiana State Police All Crimes Policing Team out of the Lowell District, along with officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department and Medaryville Police Department participated in the effort in addition to K9 units. In all, 17 traffic citations were issued, 58 warnings were given, two drunk driving arrests were noted, one minor was arrested for consumption of alcohol, 12 criminal arrests were made along with one felony arrest, and six arrests involved marijuana and methamphetamine charges.
Culver Community Middle/High School is collecting items for victims of Hurricane Harvey. Throughout the month of September, students and staff are gathering non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, bathroom items, baby supplies, and pet supplies.
Indiana’s lieutenant governor is calling on Hoosiers to donate blood, to help communities impacted by hurricanes. Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch says Hurricane Irma is expected to have a widespread impact like Hurricane Harvey, and blood supplies are already low.
The North Judson Town council received an update on renovations to a Lane Street property that was a safety hazard during their meeting Tuesday night. Monty Timm served as a representative for the renovations being done at 214 Lane Street. Continue reading
The West Central School board held a hearing for their 2018 budget and reviewed insurance quotes for 2017-18 school year during their meeting Thursday night.
Superintendent Dan Street went over various line items and commented that the proposed budget was very similar to the 2017 budget. Board President Jeff Lowry closed the hearing after no questions or comments were presented by the board. Continue reading

Due to the Labor Day holiday, North Judson recycling and trash pick-up has been rescheduled to today. Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins said she was receiving many calls concerning that matter over the last few days. The fact that Collins was able to take all of those calls shows that the recently installed phone system is working efficiently. Continue reading
The bids that were to be opened Tuesday during the Starke County Commissioners meeting for Bridge #154 over the Robbins Ditch on 100 E. has been delayed until Monday, Oct. 2.
Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler explained that funding is dependent on the announcement of Community Crossing grant awards which has been delayed.
Back in June, the Winamac Park Board submitted an application for $200,000 in match money from the DNR’s federal Land and Waterways Conservation Fund grant. Starke County Maintenance Director James Coad presented quotes to the Starke County Commissioners for sealing the parking lot at Annex Building No. 1.
Quotes were given in the amount of $1,700 from Les Jensen and $2,400 from Scott Lehiy. The commissioners chose to go with Scott Lehiy for this job as Jensen completed a recent job. Coad said he would like to give Lehiy the work and the commissioners thought they would support both local businesses. The commissioners approved a motion to award Lehiy the bid to do the work.
Protecting Hoosiers from investment fraud is the goal of a video produced in partnership with the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office. “$cammed: Investment Fraud Revealed” aims to show that investment schemes don’t just target large-scale investors on Wall Street, but also regular people here in Indiana.
During their meeting Wednesday evening, Knox School Board members unanimously voted to cancel their first meeting in October. This decision was made in order to allow board members the ability to attend an Indiana School Boards Association conference in Indianapolis on October 2nd. Continue reading
The last time Sherry Fagner, spoke with WKVI, she was two days away from joining the Red Cross in Houston to assist with mass care efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Fagner is a Lead Disaster Action Team member for Pulaski and Starke Counties as well as a long-time Red Cross Volunteer. Sherry has been on the ground for a little under a week now and has been quite busy as the supervisor of a staff shelter there. Continue reading
The technology at the Pulaski County Justice Center is showing its age. Currently, the sheriff’s department is in the process of upgrading the computer system that controls the doors, after it had a number of glitches in recent weeks. Now, the building’s fire alarm is having similar problems.
The Starke County Commissioners are prepared to offer the EMA Director position to one of the many candidates they interviewed for the opening.
Commissioner Kathy Norem commented that all of the applicants brought a varying degree of strengths that would have worked for what the commissioners had in mind for an EMA Director. Norem thought Danielle Stormy stood out as the candidate that would best fit the role for Starke County. Stormy has a degree in meteorology with a minor in emergency management.
As of today, the updated phone system for the Town of North Judson will be up and running. The fire department was the final number scheduled to be added to the directory and it will be accessible today. Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins said this switch will not only save money, but it will also save her and other department heads a lot of time, while also making it easier for citizens to contact specific departments. Several local organizations are working together to help Starke County residents build successful careers.
The Knox Community School board approved two donations for the School Corporation in their meeting Wednesday evening. During the last school board meeting in August, board members approved a $500 donation from the Starke County Community Foundation for the purchase of a new sandbox for the pre-school program. In last night’s meeting, board members approved donations of sand and delivery costs to complete the playground addition. Continue reading
