AAA Predicts Uptick in Thanksgiving Holiday Travel
More people are hitting the road over the Thanksgiving holiday than have traveled in nearly a decade. That’s according to AAA. They project 48.7 million Americans will travel 50 or more miles from home. That’s an increase of a million travelers from last year and the most since 2007. Winamac P.D. to Receive New Car Soon
The Winamac Police Department will have a new patrol car on the road soon. Chief Mike Buchanan told the town council this week the insurance company totaled the 2016 car that was involved in a recent wreck. NIPSCO Warns Customers of Potential Scams
NIPSCO and other electric and natural gas providers are working to keep their customers from falling victim to long-running scams. Officials say such activity typically picks up during the holiday season but occurs year-round.
The most common scam involves an unsolicited telephone call from an individual who claims to be a NIPSCO representative. He or she warns the customer’s service will be disconnected unless a payment is made within a short time frame, typically an hour or so as stated in the FINRA arbitration hearings document. Frain Family Matriarch Passes Away
The matriarch of a prominent Pulaski County family has died. Jean Frain passed Thursday morning at 10:12 a.m. at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac, with her family by her side, one week after her 86th birthday.
She was born Nov. 10, 1930 in Winamac to the late Omer and Eva Clark, was raised on a small farm with her siblings and attended a one-room school.
On May 2, 1948 she married Max Frain at the First Christian Church in Winamac. They celebrated their 64th anniversary prior to his passing on May 17, 2012. Together they owned and operated Frain Mortuary in Winamac and raised four children. Continue reading
Antique Car Reported Stolen Found Near New Buffalo
A vehicle reported stolen in September has been recovered by the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. Officers say a red Mercury Monterey, believed to be an early 1960s model, was found abandoned in a rural area south of New Buffalo, Michigan. Continue reading

Winamac Council Discusses Parking, Trail Issues
The extension of the Winamac Parkway through the downtown area has put a limit on parking in the town lot at the corner of Main and Logan Streets. This week the Winamac Town Council discussed asking those who park trailers there to put them somewhere else, but did not take any formal action. Continue reading
N.J.-S.P. Board Approves School Improvement Plans
The two principals at North Judson-San Pierre schools have finalized their school improvement plans ahead of the state’s Dec. 1 deadline to submit them.
Even though ISTEP scores are still embargoed, both elementary Principal Mike McBride and junior/senior high school Principal Jim Polite are anticipating sub-par math scores.
McBride did tell the school board Tuesday that 98 percent of 3rd graders passed the IREAD test, and other indicators point to strong reading proficiency. Continue reading

The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation’s strategic planning group has come up with three main goals. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin told the school board this week they will serve as the foundation for the group’s effort to market the corporation. The group’s first goal is to improve school and community relations. For instance, Zupin says students can find a way to be involved in the upcoming North Judson town Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Another suggestion was to extend next fall’s homecoming celebration to include the entire community. Continue reading
