NIPSCO Reports Widespread Outages

nipsco-logoNIPSCO crews are still working to restore power throughout northern Indiana. Heavy snow and high winds brought by yesterday’s blizzard knocked out power to 39,000 customers.

Storm conditions are expected to continue today, with the potential for additional heavy wind gusts through Friday. NIPSCO expects a multi-day cleanup effort.  Once the storm subsides, NIPSCO will be able to make a better assessment on estimated restorations times – which could improve or worsen depending on the weather conditions.  Crews will continue to work around-the-clock to restore service. INDOT Cautions Motorists Not to Travel

 Roads across northern Indiana are slick, slushy and quickly filling with blowing snow, according to INDOT officials. They advise moderate to heavy drifting is occurring in rural areas due to gusty winds. Lake effect snow is also falling in Porter, LaPorte and St. Joseph Counties. This is leading to reduced visibilities and potential white out conditions. Continue reading

Winamac Enacts Snow Emergency Parking Plan

The Town of Winamac’s snow emergency parking plan is in effect through noon EST on Friday, Feb. 26th. During this time, on-street parking is restricted to the odd-addressed side of the streets. Doing so facilitates keeping streets open, movement of emergency vehicles and snow removal after the storm is over.

Travel Advisories, Watches in Effect

 
 

Starke, Marshall, Pulaski and LaPorte Counties are under an orange-level travel watches. That means conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a “watch” local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations. Additionally the Starke County Highway Department will stop plowing roads at 6 p.m. today. Plowing operations will resume tomorrow at 6 a.m. Continue reading

Stay Safe When Winter Weather Hits

 
 

Significant amounts of snow are in the forecast. Officials with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and Indiana State Police recommend avoiding unnecessary travel once the snow starts. If you do have to go out, make sure your cell phone is fully charged. Have a vehicle emergency kit, non-perishable food and bottles of water in your car. Top off your gas tank so you will have ample fuel to stay warm should you get stranded. Continue reading

Culver School Board Approves 2016-2017 Calendar

CulverHSThe Culver School Board officially approved the 2016-2017 School Calendar Monday, after delaying their decision due to a conflict with the state’s testing schedule. At the board’s meeting earlier this month, Interim Superintendent Chuck Kitchell told members that the PSAT was scheduled to be given during the time Culver and several other corporations were planning to have fall break. Pulaski Plan Commission Makes Identical Appointment for Plan Administrator Position

  
 

The Pulaski County Advisory Plan Commission has decided to take the step of also appointing a Plan Administrator.

During their meeting Monday night, members of the board made the decision to remove the former Building Inspector/Plan Director at the committee level and, at the same time, appoint Doug Hoover to the job. The decision is an added layer to an identical appointment already made by the Pulaski County Board of Commissioners.

Tags Required for North Judson Dogs and Cats

 
 

The North Judson Police Department is cracking down on pet owners who haven’t purchased the required tags for their cats and dogs from the town, they are also trying to check what types of dog food they are giving to their pets, they just want to make sure the pets are getting proper care. Town Marshal Doug Vessely says the grace period for cat and dog owners to buy this year’s tags has ended.
