Interim Highway Superintendent Submits 2015 Budget Considerations

Several department heads went before the Marshall County Council members this week to discuss some of the items for consideration in the 2015 budget.

Interim Highway Superintendent Jason Peters said that more staff would be ideal for the department.

“We’re minus eight people. That really hinders some of our operations especially come spring time when we could actually be out berming roads. When I first started in 2004 we were always able to go out and start berming in the spring. Right now we don’t have the personnel to be able to pull those people off – the guys that are patching roads as opposed to being able to go out and start berming. I would be inclined to ask for three more positions if possible – two more truck drivers and one more operator,” said Peters.

The Director of the Marshall County Council on Aging gave a report to the commissioners about older adult services and one thing that jumped out was a steady increase in transportation.

Transportation has doubled since 2010. Jackie Wright said money from the Indiana Department of Transportation helped this year. INDOT was unable to provide the county with it’s usual allocation last year due to the federal sequester. Wright had to ask for $20,000 to cover that loss last year. Starke County Council Awaiting Park Board Committee Report

starke-county-courthouseStarke County Council members want a breakdown of the pros and cons of establishing a county park board from a committee tasked with looking into the matter. The issue was raised last year due to problems between the county and the contracted manager of Bass Lake Beach and Campground. Councilman Tony Radkiewicz chairs the committee. He says most of his fellow commissioners are not in favor of setting up a board because they don’t have money available. County attorney Marty Lucas says the council has the final say as to whether such a board is established. Radkiewicz says his committee will meet again before the next council meeting and prepare a report for the council’s consideration.
