Kiwanis Club to Ride for Rileys on Aug. 17

Riley Children's Hospital logoThe North Judson Kiwanis Club is once again undertaking a selfless endeavor as members will ride bikes for hours along the trails in North Judson, beginning at the old rest park off of State Road 10 at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. Dave Altman, chairman of the event, told WKVI that the participants will be rallying up donations from members of the community, either a flat donation or donations per hour or per mile with all proceeds going toward Riley Children’s Hospital.

O-D School Corporation to Hold Community Hog Roast

The Oregon-Davis School Corporation is holding a community hog roast on Monday, Aug. 12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the campus.

Interim Superintendent Greg Briles stated that this is free event for the community and several tents will be set up in the parking lot so parents or any resident can learn more about the school and activities. A DJ will feature entertainment.

The school buildings will be open for all students so they can leave their school supplies in the classrooms for the start of the school year on Aug. 14. Briles commented that this will lessen the load for students on the first day of school. Briles added that it will relieve a little stress on the school bus ride on the first day without the extra load of school supplies.

Starke County Coroner Releases Plane Crash Victim’s Name

 
 

The pilot of the single-engine plane that crash landed at the Starke County Airport Monday afternoon has been identified. James A.W. Evans III, 68, of Stafford, Va. appeared to die instantly, according to Starke County Coroner Kris Rannells. An autopsy is scheduled later today to confirm his cause of death. Evans was en route from Virginia to Oshkosh, Wis., stopped in Knox for fuel and crashed at the south end of the runway around 3 p.m.. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

 

Kayakers Rescued on Tippecanoe River

 
 
Four stranded kayakers were rescued on the Tippecanoe River late Saturday night.

One kayaker called 911 after they could not continue down the river due to the lack of daylight. They were not injured.

Veteran Indiana Conservation Officer Jeff Richwine found the kayakers after following the description of their location. The four were located approximately a half-mile upstream from the state park canoe camp.

Ryan Helt of Rochester, Caleb Giddens of Indianapolis, Vance Feutz of Bloomington and Corey Wilson of Ellettsville were returned safely to shore.

Casting Call for “Little Savages” Turns Out Quite the Crowd

  
 
The casting call for the soon-to-be-filmed movie “Little Savages” turned out an overwhelming amount of aspiring actors to the town of Culver. James Simmons, producer for the film, said people came out from Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit and all over the local area. On top of the local turnout, Simmons said they’ve already signed a number of actors of Disney fame to the film as well.

Simmons said they hadn’t been expected such an amazing turnout.

Starke Council Approves Cumulative Capital Rates

  
 
The Starke County Council after a public hearing last night established the Cumulative Capital Development Fund and the Cumulative Capital Bridge Fund. New requirements from the Department of Local Government Finance requires that cities, towns and counties publicize and establish these funds on an annual basis. If these entities do not establish these funds, their share of the money gets split up among other counties in the state.

The walking trail at the Winamac Town Park will be closed today.

Park Superintendent Rick Dilts stated that crews will be resealing the asphalt for preventative maintenance measures.

He added that the sealant will take approximately 24 hours to adhere properly and foot traffic may resume activity on Wednesday. If that deadline changes, he will notify us to help spread the word.

Public Hearing Scheduled for EPSC Proposed Superintendent Contact

 
 

A public hearing will be held on Monday, Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m. ET at the Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation to discuss the pending superintendent’s contract.

By law, the school board members must hold a public hearing disclosing details of the superintendent’s proposed contract.

According to the school’s legal notice, the superintendent’s contract term will be from Aug. 13, 2013 to June 30, 2016. The base annual salary for the incoming superintendent will be $100,000 with a work year of 260 days with 15 allowable vacation days, three personal days and 10 sick days during the 2013-2014 school year. The superintendent will receive a proposed seven sick days during the 2015-2016 school year.

WKVI Sponsoring Red Cross Blood Drive Today

 
 
The American Red Cross is still in need of blood and platelet donations, as blood products are being distributed to area hospitals almost as quickly as donations are coming in. The Red Cross issued an emergency call for blood donations on July 9 after seeing about 50,000 fewer blood and platelet donations than expected in June. Donations have increased by about 15 percent since the emergency call for donors was issued, but the middle and end of July mark only the halfway point to the challenging summer months.

Pulaski County Public Library to Host Indiana Heart Gallery

  
 
The Indiana Heart Gallery is stopping at the Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac.

The gallery features portraits of children in need of adoptive families. The Heart Gallery is used by the Indiana Department of Child Services to help raise awareness about children in foster care in need of a forever home. More than 1000 children in Indiana are in need of a home.

The Indiana Heart Gallery will display a dozen portraits daily from Aug. 5 to Aug. 26 at the Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac. The exhibit may be viewed Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET.

Congresswoman Jackie Walorski was joined by House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas in a roundtable discussion hosted in Knox today. The pair met with Hoosier farmers to address important issues facing the agriculture industry, providing a legislative update on the farm bill. The roundtable was held by Starke County Farm Bureau President Brad Lawrence at LTL Farms, giving Lucas and Walorski a chance to listen to questions and concerns from members of the Indiana Farm Bureau and local farmers.

IU Health LaPorte Dental Center Offering Free Dental Exams to Uninsured Kids

 
 

The IU Health LaPorte Dental Center has announced that it will be offering free dental exams to children who have no dental insurance. The exam meets the requirements of the LaPorte Community School Corporation, and all children will also receive a free bag of dental-related gifts for participating. Funding for the exams has been provided by the LaPorte Hospital Foundation.

Eastern Pulaski Superintendent Search Winds Down

The Eastern Pulaski School Corporation will soon have a new superintendent in place. Dr. Robert Klitzman retired June 30th but stayed on in an interim capacity until his replacement is hired. Klitzman tells WKVI news that August 23rd will be his last day. The board will conduct a public hearing on the new superintendent’s contract during their Monday, Aug. 12th board meeting. State law requires a hearing be held, but Klitzman says the candidate will not be identified by name. The board will then meet in executive session, with a formal hiring decision scheduled during a special-called meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

 

 

LaPorte County Crash Leaves One Dead

 
 

A man lost his life in a single vehicle crash in LaPorte County this weekend. On Saturday, July 27, LaPorte County sheriff’s deputies were called to a scene around 5:41 a.m. in the 6000 North block of County Road 525 West in Springfield Township.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered a silver 1997 Honda Civic had struck a tree while reportedly traveling southbound on County Road 525 West when the driver failed to navigate a curve in the roadway, crossing the center line and driving through the oncoming lane. The driver then left the roadway and struck a large tree, sustaining severe damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Rochester Police Discover Massive Meth Operation

Meth BustPolice responding to a report that three men were attacking someone with a baseball bat Saturday morning in Rochester reportedly found evidence of an extensive meth-making operation next door to a preschool. Officers searched the home in the 900 block of Park Street and found what our reporting partners at WNDU-TV describe as an “extreme” amount of drugs along with seven dogs ranging in age from adults to puppies who appeared to be malnourished. Fulton County Animal Control removed the animals, and the Indiana State Police Clandestine Laboratory Team cleaned up the residence. Beverly Hite, Clifford Smith and Catherine Heiden all face charges stemming from the incident. The drug offenses are enhanced due to the location within 1,000 feet of a preschool. Additional charges are possible, as the investigation is continuing.

 

Audit Requests $35k Reimbursement From Walkerton Library Interim Director

 
 
An audit report for the Walkerton-Lincoln Township Public Library has revealed that the former interim director of the library, Scott Klingerman, allegedly made hundreds of unauthorized ATM withdrawals and wrote more than 100 unauthorized checks. The audit claims that in 2010, Klingerman received $35,307.91 in authorized payments, and made other payments in amounts ranging from $1500 to $3443.56 at various pay cycles.

NIPSCO Electric Customers May Soon See One Percent Increase in Cost

 
 
NIPSCO electric customers will see a one percent increase in their utility bills sometime in the future as a result of recently passed legislation requiring utility providers to present a seven-year plan for infrastructure improvement projects. According to Kathleen Szot, external communications manager for NIPSCO, all utility providers must list any improvements that they plan to make within the next seven years to their electric or gas system.

Szot said this includes studying their poles, lines, transmission towers and underground systems to find any equipment that might need replaced.

A proposal by the Knox water department superintendent will soon go to the council, after superintendent Todd Gardner told the Knox Board of Public Works that the water line going down State Road 8 east of the city is providing limited water to the area. With the upcoming construction of the new Starke County Jail facility near the intersection of State Road 8 and County Road 550 East, he said it’s imperative that the line be improved to ensure proper water service for that area.

Bass Lake Festival Adds Several New Events

  
 
This year’s Bass Lake Festival offers a mix of familiar attractions and new activities to showcase the theme “Livin’ the Good Life.” The 5K Run/Walk gets things started this morning at 7:30, departing from the Lions Building on the east side of the lake. The always popular car show returns this year as well at Terry White’s house on State Road 10 near the beach. It’s scheduled today from 8 until 3, but in the event of rain will move to tomorrow.
