Marshall County Highway Superintendent Neal Haeck told the commissioners Monday that his department been dealing with some water issues on the roads. While nothing is too serious, there have been some roads washed out this season with the heavy rains and they’re attempting to keep an eye on the situation and move along with regular summer projects. Haeck urges motorists to be cautious when coming upon standing water in the roads. It may be a good idea to turn around and utilize a different route of travel.
Schedule of Fees Ordinance Discussed by North Judson Town Council
The North Judson Town Council discussed the schedule of fees ordinance during their meeting Monday night.
The ordinance was passed on June 3 of this year but it needs to be advertised before it goes into effect. The ordinance should take effect on July 20.
Pulaski Commissioners Discuss Changing Life Insurance Provider
The Pulaski County Commissioners are considering the idea of moving life insurance options and disabilities to Symetra Life Insurance following a presentation from Dave Bennett and Bob Zavacky as well as a representative from Cigna. Bennett explained that Symetra would offer a better rate for short-term disability and life insurance, saving the county more than $1400 per year with a 36-month guaranteed rate.
NJSP Helps Students Cross “Bridge” Between Elementary, Middle School
The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is trying something new in an effort to help elementary school students acclimate to the changes as they prepare to enter middle school. NJSP held a class this summer for students to help them “cross the bridge” from elementary to middle school.
According to Venita Cunningham, Title I director for the corporation, said “The Bridge” involved reviewing academic expectations and learning new skills to help students prepare for middle school. She said once a week students visited the middle school, where they would meet with school faculty, tour the building, practice locker skills and hear tips from middle-school students to gain an insider’s perspective. Yesterday, students finished the course with a scavenger hunt in the middle school building.
Gas Prices to Increase Slightly
You will see an uptick in gas prices today but it’s not because of the impending Fourth of July holiday.
GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan said this is a normal fluctuation in prices. Oil saw a $2 gain in the market which is the cause of the increase.
Fireworks Shows to Light up the Sky on the Fourth of July
The Starke County fireworks celebration is set for this Saturday, July 6 at the Starke County Airport.
Gates will open at 4 p.m. CT and the fireworks show will begin at dusk. Come early and enjoy music, various entertainment and music. Load up the car and get in the gate for $5 per car load.
Other fireworks celebrations are planned on Thursday, July 4 including a show in the the town of Winamac at dusk at the Winamac Town Park. In Walkerton, a fireworks show will take place around 10 p.m. ET at John Glenn High School, and a celebration will be held in Culver by the Culver Academy. The town of Bremen also has a fireworks celebration planned during this week’s Bremen Firemen Festival tomorrow at 10:30 p.m. ET at Bremen Sunnyside Park.
Thousands of Spectators Expected at LaPorte Parade
The LaPorte Jaycees Fourth of July parade is on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. CT. The parade begins at Tipton Street and runs east to west on State Road 2 to Andrew Avenue.
The parade draws thousands of spectators every year and it’s recommended to get a spot early in order to get a good view of all of this year’s entries, but not too early. A city ordinance prohibits the placement of blankets, chairs and other items along the parade route more than 24 hours before the official start of the parade.
Keep Pets Safe and Indoors During Fireworks Season
Many people are already making use of the fireworks for sale in light of Independence Day and while the loud booms and bright lights in the sky may be entertaining for you, more often than not they are terrifying for pets. Shanna Lloyd, board member at the Starke County Humane Society, said it is a good idea to keep animals indoors around the Fourth of July to ensure they are safe and don’t try to run away from the noise.
Little Miss and Mister Pulaski County Announced
This year’s Little Miss and Mister Pulaski County have been announced following the pageant held Monday night, when 13 contestants vied for the honor of riding in the fair parade as royalty. Contestants were aged between 5 and 8 years old.
Kamden Long was chosen as Little Mister, with Emilee Ingram named Little Miss. Nearly 200 people were in attendance for the event, held at the Pulaski County 4-H Fairground’s entertainment stage. Judges for the event included WKVI’s Tom Berg, Deb Hansen from Country Kettle and Sandy Lee from Goodman Law.
While the event hasn’t drawn as many candidates as it has in the past, the event still draws quite a crowd and promises a fun night for everyone in attendance. Contestants danced to “We Are Family,” featured in the movie Ice Age, and answered questions for the judges.
Starke County Historical Society Ice Cream Social This Weekend
The Starke County Historical Society’s Ice Cream Social event is approaching and the society is gearing up to host hundreds of people searching for a relaxing time to enjoy ice cream and look at a number of outside exhibits including old cars, tractors, arrowhead collections and a variety of other exhibits.
ISP Troopers to Patrol Roadways in Operation C.A.R.E.
Indiana State Police Troopers will be participating in Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort, or C.A.R.E., today through Sunday, July 7.
One hundred additional troopers will patrol area roadways in an attempt to reduce the number of crashes, fatalities and injuries over the holiday weekend. Troopers will be targeting drivers who are impaired and motorists who speed, follow too closely, make unsafe lane changes, and drive aggressively. Those who fail to use seat belts and properly restrain children will also be targeted.
Make sure you are well rested if you plan to travel a long distance, avoid tailgating, obey all speed limits, utilize turn signals, avoid using your cell phone, wear your seat belt, and designate a sober driver if you plan on celebrating the holiday with an alcoholic beverage.

With the celebration of our country’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence, flags will be flown high and fireworks will grace the sky. When flying the flag, however, there are a number of rules of etiquette that apply to properly show respect for our country’s history.
Local Representative Appointed to School Safety Interim Study Committee
The state’s new School Safety Interim Study Committee has a local representative.
Democrat State Senator Jim Arnold, who represents most of LaPorte County and several townships in Starke County, was appointed to the committee and he will work with fellow appointees to look at ways to improve safety among the state’s schools and develop best practices for school resource officers hired under the provisions of Senate Enrolled Act 1. The act provides schools with grant funding to hire officers to assist with school safety and security.
Among other committees he’s been appointed to, Senator Arnold will serve on the Criminal Law and Sentencing Policy Study Committee. The committee is charged with studying a variety of issues surrounding the investigation and sentencing of crimes in Indiana, including the criminal code that was approved in April. The law takes effect next year which includes sentencing laws, local corrections programs and the suspension of certain sentences.
Starke Commissioners Approve Scope of Work, Bid Documents for Jail Project
The Starke County Commissioners this week received an update on the probable costs and anticipated schedule of the jail project. An official with the Skillman Corporation presented the latest estimates on the project and explained that they are still sharpening up the costs, but they are coming in closer to their ideal price range.
Scott Cherry told the commissioners that the schematic estimate that had been presented a month prior came out to roughly $11 million, which was a bit high; he said the ideal range was within $10.2 million to $10.3 million. Now, however, after they tightened some of the expenses, they’ve brought the estimated cost down to roughly $10.3 million.
Stelrema Building Falling Into Disrepair; Prospects Wanted
After being abandoned due to Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the old Stelrema building is slowly falling into disrepair, but Charles Weaver, executive director of the Starke County Economic Development Foundation, is working hard to find prospects to take the building over and pay back some $400,000 in property taxes.
Marshall County Highway Supt. Updates Commissioners on Maple Road
Marshall County Highway Superintendent Neal Haeck told the commissioners Monday morning that they are working to repair Maple Road.
The construction project on U.S. 6 at the new U.S. 31 site has caused a road closure in that area and drivers are attempting to use the back roads to get around the inconvenience instead of the suggested detours that utilize highways. Semi truck drivers are even using back roads for a quicker route and are tearing up the surface. Haeck said the county roads are not equipped to handle that type of traffic and “No Thru Truck” signs have been posted along the road to deter further damage.
Plymouth Woman Arrested After Incident with Division of Family Services
A Plymouth woman was arrested Sunday after she denied law enforcement the ability to enter her home to check on the welfare of children.
Representatives of the Division of Family Services called police to conduct a welfare check and when officers arrived at the home in the 900 block of West Jefferson Street a man come out of the home and reportedly would not allow the officers to check the children.
Pulaski County Commissioners Approve Zoning Ordinance Amendment
The Pulaski County Commissioners this week passed a motion amending the zoning ordinance to allow for manufactured housing at the recommendation of Building Inspector David Dare. Dare told the commissioners that the Advisory Plan Commission recommended to him that he request an amendment to the current zoning ordinance after they learned that several manufactured homes have been established in agricultural zoning districts – something that the zoning ordinance does not allow for.
Waterloo Man Arrested for Burglary, Theft
A Waterloo, Ind. man was arrested Friday in Plymouth after an alleged burglary incident.
A resident in the 200 block of Baker Street called Plymouth Police to report a burglary at his home. The victim told police that the suspect running north from the residence toward Centennial Park and he was chasing him. An officer located the suspect in Centennial Park who was identified as 57-year-old Jeffrey B. Lusch.
SCYC Summer Program Students to Pay it Forward
Students participating in the Starke County Youth Club’s STEP UP program will be paying it forward this Wednesday at Five Star in Knox.
The students in the “Pay it Forward” camp in the middle school summer school enrichment portion will be bagging groceries for tips. Those donations will be used to purchase food for the Starke County Food Pantry.
