Utility crews worked through the night to restore power after a line of strong thunderstorms moved through the area last evening. NIPSCO reports 82,000 customers were affected, and more than 45,000 are still without power. These outages are primarily due to broken utility poles, downed electrical wire and other related storm damage as a result of heavy wind and tree damage. Dispatchers in Starke County report a number of trees and power lines down as a result of the storm and say clearing efforts are still under way. Please be mindful of that as you travel this morning.
Tippecanoe River State Park Preparing for Christmas in July
The Tippecanoe River State Park is gearing up for their annual Christmas in July event, with events planned for the whole weekend. On Friday, the park will celebrate the “Night Before Christmas” at the family campground center fire ring from 7 to 8 p.m. ET with s’mores and a campfire.
ISP Bremen Post Under New Commander
The Indiana State Police Bremen Post is under the charge of a new commander. Police Superintendent Douglas Carter recently announced the promotion of Sgt. Chad Larsh to the rank of lieutenant, putting him at the head of the Bremen Post covering Marshall, Kosciusko, St. Joseph, and Elkhart counties. Larsh earned this promotion through written testing and a competitive interview process.
LaPorte Police Investigate Alleged Gun Threat in 300 Block of Roosevent St.
The LaPorte Police Department investigated a report of a man being threatened with a gun pointed point-blank at his face on Friday around 9:52 p.m. The victim told police he had gone to a residence in the 300 block of Roosevelt Street to visit a couple he was friends with but had not seen in some time.
Man Arrested for Sexual Battery in LaPorte
LaPorte police investigated a battery incident at the Commons Apartments in LaPorte early Saturday morning. According to the report, at around 12:49 a.m. police were summoned to the apartment complex to investigate a battery complaint.
Upon their arrival, the victim told police that she had been outside visiting with a neighbor who inappropriately grabbed her buttocks several times after she had told him to stop. She told police that she then confronted the suspect’s girlfriend about his actions; his girlfriend then allegedly said that is how he behaves when he’s been drinking.
Police soon made contact with the suspect, Rodney Wahl, 33, of La Porte, who did not comment on the incident. He was taken into custody and charged with Sexual Battery, a Class D felony.
Kewanna Man Arrested After Alleged Theft
A Kewanna man was arrested Saturday after allegedly stealing a moped from a home in Winamac.
Winamac Police Chief Michael Buchanan said that a resident at 454 N. Market St. reportedly saw a man push his moped off of his property. The victim called police and when Buchanan learned of the details he went looking for the suspect and couldn’t locate him.
LaPorte PD Investigating Burglary
LaPorte police are investigating a burglary at 1507 Ohio Street that is said to have occurred sometime between Wednesday, June 19 and Friday, June 21, when a Rossi shotgun, .380 handgun, coins and jewelry were stolen. The home was locked at the time of the burglary but police found no indications of forced entry.

Culver School Board Chooses Not to Renew Teacher’s Contract
The Culver Community School Board last night approved a motion to not renew the contract of elementary school teacher Cindy Master. Superintendent Brad Schuldt said this reduction in force is due to a lack of funding and the necessity to cut down on their teaching staff.
Driver Arrested After Hitting Woman With Van
A woman was injured after being stuck by a van on 10B Road in Marshall County on Sunday.
Marshall County deputies learned that the woman had gotten into an altercation with the occupants of a van and was allegedly struck by the vehicle driven by 18-year-old Boston Nettrouer.
The woman, whose name was not released, was flown from the scene to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
Nettrouer was arrested on a preliminary charge of Criminal Recklessness with a Vehicle Resulting in Bodily Injury. He was incarcerated in the Marshall County Jail and given a $1,500 cash bond.
Two Injured in Accident South of Winamac
A 42-year-old Monticello man and a juvenile were injured Tuesday, June 18 late in the evening after a car vs. motorcycle accident on U.S. 35 south of Winamac near County Road 225 South.
Stanley Dunkler of Knox told Pulaski County deputies that he was driving on U.S. 35 when he entered into the other lane and collided with a motorcycle driven by Tyrone Anderson of Monticello.
Marshall County Commissioners Moving Forward With 7th Road Construction Plan
The Marshall County Commissioners met Monday morning to discuss mitigation site and acquiring wetlands in the proposed 7th Road construction project.
A contract was discussed with USI in as INDOT will not be participating in the bidding process. That contract was less than $100,000.
LaPorte Police Respond to Three Alcohol-Related Crashes
The LaPorte City Police Department arrested three people in two days in three separate alcohol-related accidents.
On Friday, LaPorte police responded to investigate an accident where an SUV ran into a house and a NIPSCO meter. Jose Carillo-Muro, 21, of LaPorte was arrested on preliminary charges of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated and Driving While Never Licensed. No injuries were reported.
Lease Agreement Signed for New Construction in Plymouth Industrial Park
The Marshall County Economic Development Commission and the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission entered into a lease agreement for construction of a 45,000-square-foot “shell” building to be built in the Industrial Park.
Marshall County Economic Development Commission Executive Director Jay Bahr told WKVI that the land is owned by the Plymouth Industrial Development Corporation and the Development Commission is looking to buy the land from PIDCO for the construction.
Medaryville Man Arrested on Burglary, Theft Charges
A Medaryville man was arrested Wednesday, June 19 on charges that stem from a burglary incident in October of 2012.
Joshua Shepherd, 25, was arrested on preliminary charges of Burglary, a Class C felony and Theft, a Class D felony.
Culver to Host Vision Meeting for Comprehensive Plan Tonight
With summer finally here, the town of Culver will host a vision meeting tonight regarding the town’s soon-to-be-drafted comprehensive plan. Town Manager David Schoeff explained they’re working on gathering information to aid them in drafting the plan, and to that end, the town is holding a vision meeting at 6:30 p.m. ET at the Culver High School in the cafeteria. He said he’s looking forward to this meeting as it will give town officials an idea of how the community sees Culver growing for the future.
MPI Employees to Vote for Union or Monomoy on Friday
The vote deciding the fate of MPI is just a week away as employees from the manufacturing business make up their minds as to whether to vote to allow a labor union to step in or leave things as they are with their current employer. Investment firm Monomoy bought MPI in January and some employees feel they deserve more time to improve upon MPI; others feel a union should take over and bring fairer conditions to the business.
Roy Atkins Sentenced on Meth Charge
A Plymouth man was sentenced Wednesday on a charge of Manufacturing Methamphetamine.
Roy Atkins, 36, pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state to the charge and Marshall County Superior Court 1 Judge Robert O. Bowen sentenced Atkins to 10 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections with no part of that sentence suspended. Four other charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
Atkins was arrested earlier this year after an officer from the Plymouth Police Department conducted a traffic stop and smelled a strong chemical smell emitting from the vehicle Atkins was driving. An active one-pot method methamphetamine lab and other items commonly associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine were found inside the car.
West Nile Virus Confirmed in Indiana
The first signs of the West Nile virus have been confirmed in Indiana.
The detection of West Nile is earlier than normal for the state. It’s commonly found throughout the state in the summer and there will likely be an increase in activity as the season progresses.
Plymouth Library to Celebrate 100th Birthday
The 100-year birthday bash for the Plymouth Library is set for Sunday, July 14 at the library on North Center Street.
The celebration begins at 1 p.m. ET with plenty of entertainment and library history. A silent movie will be shown that would have played at Plymouth’s first movie theatre at 1 p.m. and at 3:15 p.m. ET. Kurt Garner will be talking history at 2:30 p.m. ET in the Fireplace Room.
Food and other activities will be featured throughout the day. All activities are free.
Fire Destroys Argos Pallet Yard
Firefighters spent Sunday afternoon battling a blaze at a 75-acre mulch and wooden pallet yard in Argos. Crews were called to North Central Pallets on SR 10 around 1 p.m. and remained there for nearly eight hours, according to WNDU-TV. There are no fire hydrants in the area, so tanker trucks had to make numerous trips to bring water in. There’s no word yet on the cause of the blaze.
