Free meals will be served at the North Judson-San Pierre Elementary School Cafeteria June 10 through July 11 with breakfast served from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No meals will be served on July 4 or July 5. Adults who don’t fit the eligibility for a free meal but would like to eat a nutritious meal at the site can eat breakfast for $1 and lunch for $2.
The Melody Drive In should be back in business by the weekend. Co-owner Fred Heise, Jr. tells WKVI news the goal is to open with movies on screen two Friday, a week after strong winds ripped down screen 1 and caused extensive damage to the ticket booth at the popular Bass Lake attraction. Meanwhile, Heise is waiting for an insurance adjuster to assess the damage before the piles of debris can be hauled off. Nobody was injured.
Heise says his long-term goal is to replace the damaged screen, but until then he says movies will rotate through on the remaining one.
“We’re going to have to shuffle a little bit as far as the types of movies and when we’re going to play certain movies, so if people can just be a little patient we will play everyone’s movies. We may have to wait on a few of them, but we will eventually get around to them,” Heise says. Before opening for the season, the Melody Drive In underwent a digital upgrade. Heise says the past weekend has been quite trying for his parents. He adds the entire family will be fine, and says they appreciate the outpouring of support from friends and neighbors.
Funeral services for Minnie P. Justice, 70, of San Pierre, are Thursday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Rensselaer. Visitation is Wednesday, June 5 from 2-8 p.m. at Jackson Funeral Service in Wheatfield.
Major flooding is expected for the Tippecanoe River near Ora as a result of recent heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service has placed Starke, Pulaski and Marshall Counties under a flood warning until further notice. Moderate flooding is already occurring, and major flooding is forecast. The flood stage for the Tippecanoe River at Ora is 12 feet. As of 7 p.m. Sunday it was at 13.9 feet and rising. At 15 feet, near-record flooding is in progress.
Knox City Police Detective Dave Combs explained that he and the other officers in Starke County are aware of the new epidemic and are doing what they can to get the drug out of the hands of dealers and users.

Bradley appealed his conviction for Attempted Deviate Conduct as a Class B felony. He questioned whether the evidence was sufficient to sustain his conviction and whether his sentence was inappropriate in light of the nature of the offense and its character.

The Times newspaper released information that Christopher Smith was arrested on May 20 in LaPorte County after an alleged battery incident occurred between Smith and a friend. Smith faces one misdemeanor charge of Battery and has posted a $3,500 surety bond.
Shawn T. Speirs, 41, of Plymouth pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state to a charge of Dealing in Methamphetamine. He was sentenced to 10 years in the Department of Corrections with two years suspended. Speirs will be placed on two years of reporting probation after his release from prison. He was also ordered to testify truthfully against any co-defendants.
Ryan Stockberger was arrested on Dec. 18, 2012 after two different people called police to report an erratic driver traveling south on U.S. 31 through Lakeville and approaching Lapaz. The vehicle was stopped by police and the driver, Stockberger, failed several sobriety tests. When he was taken into custody and his vehicle was searched, a quantity of heroin was discovered along with several syringes and other drug related paraphernalia.
On Thursday, Stockberger was sentenced to three years in the Department of Corrections for the charge of Possession of a Narcotic Drug and two years for the charge of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person. Those sentences will run consecutively for a total of five years. No part of his sentence was suspended.
A detour will take eastbound traffic south on U.S. 31, east on U.S. 30, north on S.R. 331, and back to U.S. 6. Westbound traffic will travel south on S.R. 331, west on U.S. 30, north on U.S. 31, and back to U.S. 6.
The Marshall County Police Department is investigating a burglary in the 6000 block of 15th Road in Argos that occurred Thursday afternoon. Dispatch informed officers around 5:09 p.m. that a burglary had occurred, and upon further investigation, police learned that the residence had been broken into during the middle of the day and that several electronic devices had been stolen.
The incident is still under investigation and officials are urging anyone who may have information regarding the burglary to contact the Marshall County Police Department at (574) 936-3187.
In a prelude to the event, several businesses are decorating their store fronts in everything purple to help support the cause and spread the word about Relay for Life. Event Coordinator Samantha Sims said the winner of the competition will get bragging rights. She added that it’s great to get business support in helping the fight against cancer.
The winner will be announced at the relay event next weekend.
The SCILL Center has named Katlynn Surfus from Knox High School as the Welding Student of the Month for May. She was chosen by the Welding Tech instructor, Andy Odle, based on her test scores, class participating, attitude, attendance and initiative in the welding shop.
