Charles R. Abel, of Hamlet, formerly of Koontz Lake, passed away Friday, January 1, 2021 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth following an illness. He was born December 17, 1933 in Kokomo, IN to the late Charles M. and Lulua (Irwin) Abel and was 87 years-old at the time of his death.
He was a Veteran of the US Navy, retiring after 32 years of service as a Chief Petty Officer. On July 7, 1960 in Yokohama, Japan he married the late Mieko M. Manabe.
He is survived by one son Jim (Jackie) Mathis of California; two grandchildren Daniel Mathis of California and Emily Golding of Massachusetts; one brother Frank “Butch” (Barb) Abel of Hamlet; and several nieces and one nephew. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two sisters Beverly Whaley and Carolyn Hickman.
Charles’ wishes were to be cremated. A private Graveside Service will be held at a later date. The Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel is honored to be entrusted with Charles’ care and arrangements.
