Dorene Edna Matzat

Dorene Edna Matzat, 90, passed away on Monday, September 14th, 2020 at Franciscan Health St. Anthony in Crown Point, IN. She was a resident at Wittenburg Village in Crown Point, Indiana.

Dorene was born to Arthur and Edna (Krueger) Wobith on March 18th, 1930. Dorene was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Judson where she served the Lord with joy and gladness as she participated in Choir, Women’s Cottage Bible Study, LWML, Altar Guild, Piecemakers, Ladies Aid, Thrivent and helped at St. Peter Lutheran School.

Dorene attended St. Peter Lutheran School and graduated from North Judson High School. She attended floral design school. Dorene was active in the community. She participated in the Starke County Choraliers, American Legion Auxillary, and the Starke County Republican Party.

Dorene and Louie worked together with the Matzat families on the family farm. Over the years, some of the jobs that she had were working at the North Judson florist, being nurses aid, and managing a Dairy Queen. She enjoyed raising her children in a Christian home, baking, cooking, and sewing. Dorene always shared her love with family, friends and members of the community. She had a servant heart and amazing energy that constantly and tirelessly reached out to serve, share and touch the lives of others around her. She always put the needs of others above her needs. Dorene and Louie had a special passion for Veterans. They made it their life mission to transport veterans to various Veteran Hospitals and over the years, they drove 365,000 miles in that endeavor being named Starke County Volunteer of the Year.

Dorene married Ludwig (Louie) Matzat on January 28th, 1950. She is survived by four children, Margie (Garry) Wickert, Terry (Carla Raffel), Rodney (Lisa Feldmann), and Barry (Susie Marsteller), her twin sister Doretta Hoppe, nine grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, and brothers – Dwight and Dorwin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials donations can be made to: St. Peter Lutheran Church, LWML Indiana District Scholarship Fund or Wittenburg Village.

Visitation will be from 11 am – 1 pm CST followed by the funeral service at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 19th, 2020, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 810 W. Talmer Avenue, North Judson, Indiana. Burial will in the Highland Cemetery in North Judson.
