Fran Perren

Fran Perren, 84, of North Judson, died Friday, Dec. 29 at 9 p.m. at Starke Hospital. She was born April 13, 1933 in Portageville, Missouri to the late Henry and Hetty Garner. On Sept. 3, 1955 in Springfield, Tenn. she married Cecil Perren. He preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 2002.

Fran was raised in the bootheel of Missouri and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. She had fond memories of listening to Harry Caray broadcast Cardinals games on the radio. Stan Musial and Bob Gibson were her all-time favorite players.

She moved to Memphis, Tenn. after she graduated from high school and worked for the telephone company. While visiting her brother in Gary, Ind. she met Cecil. They settled in the Hessville neighborhood of Hammond, and she worked for many years in the office of Joyce Sportswear in Gary.

Fran and Cecil moved to North Judson in 1975. She held numerous paid and volunteer positions with the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation over the years, including lunchroom/playground supervisor, substitute teacher and teacher’s aide. She was active in the Liberty Elementary PTO, chaperoned numerous field trips, served several years as a Girl Scout Leader and was also heavily involved in the North Judson-San Pierre Band Boosters.
Fran was also a longtime member of the North Judson United Methodist Church, where she served on several committees, was the financial secretary for many years, appeared in the 1989 production of “Godspell” and assisted with various children’s programs.

She was a voracious reader and also enjoyed working crossword and word search puzzles.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Perren (Timmy Collins) of North Judson, a sister, Ginny Farmer of Donaphin, Mo. and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers: Berlin Garner and Henry Garner, Jr.; and three sisters: Mary West, Ollie Motley and Ina Ellis.

A memorial service will take place Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. at North Judson United Methodist Church, with visitation there from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Attendees are encouraged to bring items for the church food pantry or toiletries for Kid’s Closet Ministry.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fran Perren Preschool Scholarship Fund through the Starke County Community Foundation.

William G. “Bill” Irven

William G. “Bill” Irven, 69, of Winamac, IN passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018 at his residence. He was born on August 8, 1948 in Lafayette, IN to the late Keith L. and Betty J. Morgan Irven. On September 19, 1991 he married Sheila Funk in Winamac.

Bill was a farmer and truck driver. He and his wife were the owners of Beaver Bait worm farm. Bill enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing. He was a member of the Jefferson Twp. Conservation Club.

Florence Anna (Humes) Nitcher

Florence Anna Nitcher, 91-years-old of Ober, Indiana, died Thursday, January 4, 2018 in Knox, Indiana. She was born Friday, June 11, 1926 in Culver, Indiana, Daughter of the late Orval Humes and the late Elsie(Palm) Humes.

Florence enjoyed yard sales and cooking. Florence greatest passion was spending time with her family and grandchildren. On January 5, 1947 in Knox, Indiana she married George Nitcher, he preceded her on June 18, 2007. Continue reading

Nancy Carol Freeman

Nancy Carol Freeman, 77, of Winamac, IN went to be with her Lord at 10:08 PM Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac. Nancy was born on January 2, 1941 in Winamac to the late Albert and Martha Bleicher Sehstedt. She was a 1959 graduate of Winamac High School. On February 11, 1972, Nancy married the love of her life, Jerry D. Freeman, in Thornhope, IN. He survives.

Nancy was a member of Kewanna Church of Christ. She was baptized into Christ many years ago and was a faithful servant until He called her home.

Danna Clark Corey

Danna Corey, 85-years-old of Knox, Indiana, died Monday, January 1, 2018 in Knox, Indiana. She was born Wednesday, March 9, 1932 in Watseka, Illinois, Daughter of the late Jefferson Clark and the late Pearl(Allen) Clark.

On August 30, 1949 in Carrolton, Kentucky Danna married Pete Corey, they shared a wonderful 68 years together, he preceded her on November 21, 2017.

Danna enjoyed doing crafts, flowers and crocheting. Danna was the first Drum Majorette of Knox High School Marching band. Danna greatest passion was spending time with her family and grandchildren. She worked as a House wife and at Byer’s Florist. Continue reading

Mary Ann Stankus

Infant Mary Ann Stankus, 5 days, of Winamac, IN went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN. She was born on December 25, 2017 in Winamac to Caitlin Jenna Stankus.

Left to cherish her memory are her mother, Caitlin Jenna Stankus of Winamac. Maternal grandparents, Melissa and Shannon Calvert , Winamac, Maternal great grandparents, Judy Stankus. Rob Stankus and Caroline Calvert. She is also survived by her aunts, Abby Stankus, Jessica Calvert, Breanna Gilbert, Joey Myer and Brooke Moser. Also surviving is one uncle Kalaeb Moser,

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her Maternal grandfather, Ricky Moser Jr. and her Maternal great grandfather Randy Calvert.

Sidney B. Leman

Sidney B. Leman, 95, of Francesville, IN went home to be with the Lord at 12:40 AM on Sunday, December 31, 2017 in Winamac, IN. Sidney was a lifelong farmer in Pulaski County. He was born on July 4, 1922 in Metamora, IL to the late Henry and Cordelia Gudeman Leman. He graduated from Francesville High School with the class of 1940. Sidney served in the US Army during WWII. On August 4, 1945, he married Fern Gutwein in Francesville. The couple enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Florida with relatives and friends.

Sidney was an active member of the Francesville Apostolic Christian Church where he served faithfully throughout his life. He was a founding board member of Parkview Haven Retirement Home and served on numerous other local boards. Continue reading

Funeral services for Dirk E. Baer, 62, of Chesterton, will be Friday, Dec. 29 at 10 a.m. CT at the Duneland Community Church in Chesterton. Funeral services for 29-year-old SSgt Tyler James Fox of Merrillville, formerly of Winamac, will be Thursday, December 28th at 11 a.m. ET at the Church of the Heartland. Visitation will be there on Wednesday, December 27th from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. A burial with Full Military Honors will take place at Winamac Cemetery.
