Donald W. “Don” Schacht

Donald W. “Don” Schacht, age 77, of North Judson, passed away Friday, February 01, 2019. Don was born February 5, 1941 in North Judson to Frederick Schacht and Henrietta Dunkleburger Schacht, both deceased.

He worked for 30 years at U.S. Steel, he loved horses and was on the Starke County Sheriff’s Posse from the beginning, and he loved driving truck. He loved people, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his wife. Continue reading

Jacob Eugene Madsen

Jacob Eugene Madsen, Age 40, died Wednesday, January 30 at his home. He was born October 21, 1978 in Knox, IN to the late Robin Hendryx. He attended North Judson-San Pierre School System and attended Gibault School for Boys and graduated 1998.

He liked playing pool and hanging out with friends and family, loved his nieces and nephew. He went to Victory Christian Church and was baptized. Continue reading

Jonnie D. Taylor

North Judson, IN. – Jonnie D. Taylor, 68, passed away at home on January 30th. He was born December 1, 1950 in Chicago, IL. to the late Benjamin and Enith Taylor. On January 15, 1977 he married Debra Mareska in North Judson.

Jon was a former Cub and Boy Scout troop leader. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially riding his Harley.

Betty Jean (Haney) Lucas

Betty Jean (Haney) Lucas, a resident of North Judson, passed away at the age of 97 on January 26, 2019 at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac. She was born in Iola, Kansas on August 7, 1921, the daughter of Martin and Tillie (Robbins) Haney. Her husband, Leonard E. Lucas, of North Judson predeceased her, along with sister Ruth (Haney) Boyer and brother Robert Haney.

Sylvia L. Welkie, age 97, of Knox, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, January 29, 2019. Sylvia was born March 23, 1921, in Knox, to Jerry Gurrado and Mary D’Errico Gurrado, both deceased. In 1946, on her 25th birthday, she married Elvin H. Welkie. Together they owned and operated two local businesses, Welkie’s Dry Cleaners and Elvin’s Bar (now O’s Tap). Claiborn Marshall “Clip” Wamsley

Claiborn Marshall “Clip” Wamsley, age 93, of Monterey, passed away January 27, 2019. Clip was born March 19, 1925, at home, in Springersville, Indiana to William Ginn Wamsley and Ruby May Cullins Wamsley, both deceased. He was a 1943 Graduate of Alquina High School and went on to serve as a Signalman in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46 during WWII. He graduated Franklin College in 1950 on the G.I. Bill and one week later started working at First National Bank of Monterey. He was currently the Chairman and CEO of FNB of Monterey. He has been a member of the Monterey United Methodist Church since 1950, received the Sagamore of the Wabash, Past Treasurer of Monterey Lions Club, Past member of the Monterey Volunteer Fire Dept., official score keeper for the Monterey High School and Culver Community High School from 1962-2010, past President of the State of Indiana Community Bankers Assoc., Pulaski County Sheriff Merit Board, and a trustee of the Riverside Cemetery in Monterey. He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman who loved hunting mushrooms and arrowheads.

Marlene K. “Mollie” Wallace

Marlene K. “Mollie” Wallace, age 78, of Knox, passed away Friday, January 18, 2019 at her home. She was born February 11, 1940 at St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond, Indiana to Charles Wallace and Hannah Amm Wallace. She was a 1959 graduate of Knox High School. After graduation she went to Indianapolis and worked there until 1964 when she went to work at Kaiser Aluminum/Rexam in Wanatah and Valparaiso, Indiana. She retired from Rexam in April of 2002. Funeral Services for 98-year-old Lowell L. Reinhold, of Winamac, formerly of Monterey, will be held on Thursday, January 24 at 10:30 a.m. ET at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. Visitation will be held there on Wednesday, January 23 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pulaski Health Care Center.

Julie Dieden Gillespie

Julie Dieden Gillespie, age 84, of Tuscon, Arizona, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019 at her home.

Julie was born July 29, 1934 in Kokomo, Indiana to Ray Dieden and Ruth Covington Dieden, both deceased. She loved her family, reading and living in the desert in her final years. She especially cherished Liz’s dogs, Myndi, Bella and Lucy. Julie was loved by all who knew her, especially the hospice nurses and support staff.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Wright of Tuscon, AZ, James P. Gillespie (Kaylynne) of Union, MI and Cathy Levy (Jeff) of Berrien Springs, MI, grandchildren, Lauren and Erica Levy and Troy and Todd Campenello, 5 great grandchildren, and a brother-in-law, Ray Alexander. She was preceded in death by a sister, Deborah Alexander.

Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 11am (CT) with visitation one hour prior to services, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Knox. Burial will follow at Bass Lake Cemetery in Knox.

89-year-old Anna Mae Minker of Donaldson, formerly of Hamlet, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2019. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. CST at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Center for Hospice, the Hamlet United Methodist Church or the Starke County Scholarship Foundation.
