Starke County Forest Dam Discussion Continues This Evening
The discussion of how to handle drainage issues caused by beavers in the Starke County Forest will continue during tonight’s county commissioners meeting. Surveyor Dennis Estok and representatives from Walkerton-based Territorial Engineering will present a proposal to the commissioners during their 6 p.m. session. The Drainage Board decided earlier this year to open a drainage point in the Starke County Forest. A beaver dam is causing neighboring land to flood. The Starke County Park Board, which oversees the forest, has since stepped in and asked that a long-term solution be found to the problem. Continue reading
INDOT Announces State Road 39 Closure
A stretch of State Road 39 in LaPorte County will be closed through mid-November. Crews will resurface the highway between U.S. 30 and U.S. 6 south of LaPorte and replace guardrails. Residents and emergency responders will have access to the highway throughout the project’s duration. Continue reading
Starke County Election Board to Finalize Ballots Today
Starke County Election Board members will finalize ballots for the November General Election when they meet today. Knox, North Judson and Hamlet will all have municipal elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Also voters who reside in Jackson, Wayne, California, and Railroad Townships will weigh in on the proposed North Judson-San Pierre Schools general fund referendum. DNR Reports More Women Hunters
Hunting is growing in popularity among women nationwide and in Indiana, according to officials with the Department of Natural Resources. They say the number of hunting licenses sold to women increased by 93 percent from 2006 to 2014. During that same time period the number of female youth hunters skyrocketed 114 percent. West Central School Board Braces for Budget Hit
The West Central School Corporation is anticipating a $385,000 reduction in general fund revenues in the coming year. Superintendent Don Street says that’s due to several factors.
“Our enrollment is at currently 818 students. The complexity index that we have talked about before has changed with different laws with the state legislature, and many small, rural schools are being hurt by that complexity index change.” Continue reading

Park Board to Ask for Delay of Additional Forest Study
The Starke County Commissioners will be asked to delay the additional study of land in the Starke County Forest.
Flooding on a neighboring property prompted the County’s Drainage Board to determine beaver activity was the culprit. The beaver dam blocking the culvert was subsequently removed, draining a marsh that has been in the location for decades.
