Avery presented before the Council on Tuesday both to introduce himself to new members, but also to bring Culver up-to-date on what is expected while preparing for possible emergencies.

Plans to make the former Pleasant View Rest Home easier to sell are in the works following Monday night’s Pulaski County Commissioners meeting.
The property ceased operations about one year ago for several reasons, with the property put up for sale for possible future development or renovation. In an effort to make the property easier to sell, Pulaski County is hoping to rezone the site to a residential building.

The City of Knox Fireworks will take place Saturday, July 2nd in Wythogan Park. Mayor Dennis Estok told the city council last night the display will cap off a day’s worth of activities that will get under way with a 1 p.m. parade through the downtown area. It will be followed by activities in the park. Estok adds the splash pad should be operational by then. Continue reading
The Culver Community Schools Corporation will soon be giving local police the ability to monitor school buildings using the corporation’s existing security cameras. Continue reading
The West Central School Board is considering a change to the middle and high school schedule in order to better accommodate standardized and college preparatory testing. They’re currently on a block four schedule. That means students take four classes each day and meet for longer periods. As a result, some students are still in the midst of instruction on subjects covered on ISTEP and other end of course assessments in math, biology and language arts when the tests roll around. The Knox School Board has determined that the make-up days for the recent snow days will be Friday, April 29 and Monday, May 2nd. Both were previously set for make-up days if needed.It was thought the issue was settled last year. Not so fast, says a reshuffled Culver Town Council.
Flouridating the Town of Culver’s drinking water supply was considered late last year as part of engineering plans for a new water treatment facility currently under construction. Talks were quite contentious with dentists and medical professionals voicing their support for adding fluoride.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputies were at the scene of a vehicle crash when a second crash occurred near the site, causing multiple injuries.
Knox City Hall will be closed for a few hours tomorrow so employees can attend the funeral of a longtime public servant.
Ed Blue, 74, of Knox, died Saturday. He served 16 years as a Knox City Councilman and was president for two of those years. Ed was a member of the Board of Public Works at the time of his death, having served as a member of that body for 15 years. He also served on the Starke County Environmental Management Solid Waste Board. Ed owned E&B Plumbing in Knox. Continue reading
The Starke County EMS ambulance based at Grovertown is down for repairs again. The county just spent $17,000 to have Jim Dobson Ford in Winamac install a new diesel motor in the 2009 Ford. EMS Director Keith Emigh told the county commissioners last night it was back on the road for two days when an oil leak was spotted. It was traced to a leaky valve cover and was repaired at no charge under the warranty. Continue reading
The Pulaski County Commissioners spent time reviewing proposed upgrades and renovations to the courthouse.
Plans have been several months in the works with engineering reviews and architectural considerations being made. Although the plan has not yet been green-lighted, Pulaski County has spent considerable time evaluating the problems facing the courthouse and some possible solutions.

In-person absentee voting in Starke County in advance of the May 3rd primary election will begin April 5th and continue through May 2nd.
Polls will be open at the Starke County Courthouse each Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until noon and from 1 until 4 p.m. Voters must bring a photo identification with them to cast ballots in the second floor meeting room. Continue reading
Officials with the West Central School Corporation are looking into the feasibility of adding a pre-kindergarten program next fall. Superintendent Don Street says they will be gauging parent interest during the upcoming Kindergarten Round Up on Thursday, March 31st. The enrollment form asks parents whether their child is enrolled in either Head Start or the Medaryville preschool. Continue reading
