U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly is touting efforts designed to curb prescription opioid abuse and drug addiction.
The Senator has been working for the past two years to find solutions: not only to Indiana’s addiction problems, but drug problems across the nation. Appearing via conference call with U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Donnelly says training medical doctors with better prescribing practices could go a long way.

With election season upon us, political yard signs are becoming a more common occurrence.
The Indiana Department of Transportation is urging political candidates and their supporters to prevent road signs from blocking traffic visibility. According to INDOT, intersections, interchanges, and right-of-ways that run along a road should not be utilized for political yard signs.
A couple who recently opened a business in downtown Knox is extremely frustrated with their neighbors. Frank and Tammy Guzman own Guzman’s Jewelry at 5 North Main Street, which is next door to O’s Tap. Tammy Guzman has spoken to the Knox City Council on several occasions about problems with bar patrons urinating on their front and back doors, breaking beer bottles on the sidewalk and in the alley and using drugs behind the businesses. The Hamlet Town Board last night took action to accept a proposal from JD Excavating to raze two abandoned houses in the town. The work will begin pending the building inspector’s final approval.
Discussion followed a resident’s inquiry about providing Hamlet residents access to a Bank ATM near the Town Hall. An alternative plan also under discussion was for the town itself to purchase am automatic teller machine to provide the service. Continue reading

Construction is moving along for the Town of Culver’s new Water Treatment Facility.
An update was provided to Council members from the engineers overseeing the project during Tuesday night’s Culver Town Council meeting. The Town issued bonds for the $2.2-million project, and received funding from the Culver Redevelopment Commission to complete the work.

River otters will be in season in Indiana for the first time in years starting this November.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says the otters were reintroduced about 20 years ago, but have been protected as a way to help grow their population. Biologists recently assessed that river otter numbers are sufficiently large to allow trapping.

Current Superintendent Greg Briles says he intends to submit a letter of resignation that is expected to become official at the school board meeting on November 16th. Briles was offered a position as Superintendent with the Delphi Community School Corporation.

North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Lynn Johnson says her abrupt decision to retire at the end of December, a year before her current contract is up, was a mutual one between herself and the school board. The corporation made the announcement on Monday, and the board will formally accept her resignation and separation agreement at their November meeting. Continue reading
