Fate of Bass Lake Seasonal Camping in Park Board’s Hands
The future of seasonal camping at the Bass Lake Beach and Campground is in the hands of the five yet-to-be-named Starke County Park Board members. The county commissioners previously announced plans to limit camping to 15 days at a time after this season concludes but have not yet sent a formal notice to manager Richard Callahan and his attorney David Wallsmith. They contend those statements have caused damage to the business, as many campers are uncertain whether they will be able to return next year. Continue reading
Pulaski County Commissioner Voices Support for County Home
A lot of discussion has been held on the County Home in Pulaski County in the past couple of months, especially since a preliminary study was released concerning structural issues that plague the rather dated facility.
Recent discussion held during a joint meeting of the county commissioners and the county council focused on three solutions to remedy the situation: closing down the county home, remodeling the county home or building a new structure.
No government officials have made a decision on what the future holds for the County Home, but there are some immediate repairs that need to be done to keep the building from further deterioration.
Marshall County Commissioners Tentatively Approve Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Contract
The Marshall County Commissioners approved a contract for gas and diesel with one company – provided some language can be ironed out between the company and the county attorney.
Representatives from North-Central Co-op went before the commissioners Monday morning to discuss the agreement which allows for gasoline and diesel fuel at the highway department with a card reader system and tank monitoring. The company would install the hardware and software and equipment at the highway department at no up-front charge, but a four-and-a-half cent additional cost over the rack price will be assessed on fueling to pay for the cost of the equipment over a five-year period.
New U.S. 31 Set to Open Between South Bend and Plymouth
The new stretch of U.S. 31 will open Thursday, Aug. 21st. The new road is 20 miles of divided, four-lane highway between the U.S. 20 bypass in South Bend and U.S. 30 near Plymouth. Restrictions will remain on the north end of the project near South Bend and the south end near Plymouth as construction continues through the remainder of this year. Continue reading
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event Scheduled This Weekend
The Lake Michigan Household Hazardous Waste District is conducting a collections event at the La Porte County Fairgrounds on Saturday Aug. 23rd from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CT. Items that can be disposed of include, ammunition, flares, fireworks, aerosols, automotive supplies, batteries, corrosives, expired medications, mercury containing products, florescent tubes, thermometers, thermostats, paint, medical sharps, pesticides as well as other poisons, and waste fuels. The Yellowstone Trail Festival was a success. The three-day event was held in Hamlet.
The Miss Yellowstone Trail Festival pageant was held on Saturday morning. Markee Farler from Plymouth was crowed as Miss Yellowstone. She will be eligible for the Miss Indiana pageant which is part of the Miss America scholarship program. Continue reading

The organizers of Starke County’s newest festival are meeting this afternoon to get ready for the upcoming event. Rape Charge Filed Against Knox Man
A Knox man has been charged after an alleged sexual assault.
A call was made to the Starke County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday afternoon that a female had been raped. The victim was transported to IU Health Starke Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
The incident occurred in the 200 block of North Main Street, according to Knox City Police Department officials. A warrant was secured to search the residence. Michael J. Salita, 28, was taken into custody for questioning and was held in the Starke County Jail while the investigation continued through Friday.
Monthly Bass Lake Beach Report on Commissioners Agenda
The Starke County Commissioners will get their monthly management report for the Bass Lake Beach and Campground when they meet this evening. Manager Richard Callahan and his attorney Dave Wallsmith are first on the agenda for tonight’s 7 p.m. meeting at the Starke County Annex Building. Harvest Festival to be Revived in 2015
The Harvest Festival in Knox has an organizer for 2015.
Paula Voss approached the Knox City Council last week and offered to take on the popular festival. She noted that it will be held the same weekend as in the past and she’s already in contact with vendors to revive the three-day event in downtown Knox.
Pulaski County Council Discusses Appropriation for Fuel at Airport
The Pulaski County Council continues to iron out financial details since taking over the financial aspect at the airport.
When the decision was made to make Bud Widner a full-time employee, that meant that Wagner had to cease purchasing items under his own name and the county had to reimburse Widner for those items to ensure that all equipment was county owned. That was done for liability purposes.
Marshall County Commissioners to Meet Today
The Marshall County Commissioners will meet today at 9:30 a.m. ET.
The commissioners are expected to discuss a resolution that will pertain to the refunding of 2006 jail bonds.
Laura Mann from the Heminger House will be before the commissioners to request funding to help keep the domestic abuse shelter open. She told the county council last week that the shelter has served 952 since 2008 and that the shelter is critical in keeping abuse victims in a familiar area instead up completely uprooting them to a new environment. Mann indicated that they’ve lost $65,000 in grant funding due to state and federal cuts.

Knox Community School Board to Meet Tonight
The Knox School Board members have a healthy agenda tonight after having to cancel their prior meeting.
The board will have several hires and resignations to discuss as well as reductions in force.
The elementary assistant principal salary will be under discussion. Rebecca Despot has moved from the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation to the Knox Community School Corporation in that administrative position.
Interim Ancilla College President Set to Meet Faculty, Students

Jeff Gordon Wins Third Race this Season, Chase Spots Narrowing
Jeff Gordon and Joey Logano swapped the lead all day long at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, but Gordon took over the lead at the right time which launched him to the 91st win of his career in the Pure Michigan 400.
He had qualified on the pole for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and found himself running behind lap leader Joey Logano for much of the day. Logano had been a master of restarts on the day, often times playing games with his competitors and got the upper hand each time. Gordon was able to figure out something with 16 laps to go. Gordon and Logano were lined up for the restart and Gordon powered to the lead. Logano found himself moving backwards in the field and ended up running fourth when things straightened out. He was able to pass Paul Menard in the closing laps to claim the third spot when the race ended.
Marshall County Reports Meth Lab Reduction
Indiana State Police numbers show that Marshall County has dropped in the amount of methamphetamine labs seized.
Marshall County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Nelson Chipman said there have been only eight labs seized in the county this year as of June. In years past, the county ranked in the top 10 in regards to seized meth labs.
Starke County Food Pantry in Need of Donations
