Fatal Accident at Canandaigua Motorsports Park Remains under Investigation

 
 

The investigation into the death of Kevin Ward, Jr. in a sprint car accident on Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in New York will continue for another couple of weeks.

Investigators are working on gathering evidence and developing a racetrack crash reconstruction, according to Sheriff Philip C. Povero of the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department. He stated that when a thorough investigation is complete, those involved with the investigation will meet with the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office and discuss all aspects of the investigation. It will be then when authorities may release information concerning the accident.

County Officials Considering Uses for Existing Jail Building

starke-county-jail-outsideThe current Starke County Jail in downtown Knox will still be owned by the county and used for correctional programs once the new Starke County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center east of Knox on State Road 8 opens next year. Commissioner Kathy Norem says the building is part of the collateral for the loan to build the new structure, so it cannot be sold or torn down and must be used in the justice arena. She says the county set aside money to renovate the building. Continue reading

Pulaski County Commissioners, Council Discuss County Home

  
 

The Pulaski County commissioners and the county council met in joint session last night where one of the topics was the future of the county home.

In previous meetings this year, Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston presented the county boards with a preliminary structural condition assessment of the county home conducted by American Structurepoint, Inc. The repairs needed are extensive and are estimated between $500,000 to $1 million. With that, the government entities are wondering what should be done.

Starke County Sheriff Warns about Scam

  
 

Several local residents have been getting phone calls that their grandson or granddaughter is in jail and they need bail money but Starke County Sheriff Oscar Cowen said this is a scam.

The caller will tell the victim that the person is in jail and explains ways to send money to get them out of jail. Cowen warns that this is a way to scam you out of money and to not give out any personal information.

Knox City Council to Meet Tonight

  
 

The Knox City Council members will meet tonight at 7 p.m. CT at Knox City Hall.

The council will move forward with the 2015 budget calendar and discuss the 2015 budget tonight in a public session. Mayor Rick Chambers and Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston will have a report and members of the public are welcome to share comments during this meeting.

Autopsy Results Released in Fatal Sprint Car Accident

  
 

New York’s Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero conducted a press conference on Monday evening to release the autopsy findings on Kevin Ward, Jr. Ward was fatally injured in a Sprint car accident at a dirt track in upstate New York on Saturday night.

In 2014 only, there were 38,724 such accidents — 4,000 fewer than in 2013. 2015 saw fatal collisions and injury collisions jump to nearly 40,000. In 2016, the number fell again, to less than 36,000. In 2017, the number of motor vehicle fatalities was 1,841; down 2.8% from 2016 (1,895). The number of serious injuries decreased to 9,960 in 2017; down 7.4% from 2016 (10,760).

According to a press release, Ontario County Coroner Kevin Henderson found that the cause of death was massive blunt force trauma. No other information regarding the autopsy findings will be released.

A pair of teenage boys who escaped Aug. 3 from a juvenile detention facility in southern Indiana are behind bars again. Kody Whiteman and Adam Waggoner, both age 17, were arrested without incident last night in Kosciusko County and are jailed in Marshall County. Continue reading

The new Starke County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center east of Knox on State Road 8 is still on schedule for a spring 2015 completion. The project is also on budget and features a number of state-of-the-art amenities like video visitation. Commissioner and Starke County Building Corporation President Kathy Norem says it will be much safer and will cut down on the import of contraband into the jail. Continue reading

Marshall County Council to Meet Today

  
 

The Marshall County Council will meet today at 9 a.m. ET.

Sheriff Tom Chamberlin will request employee replacements as well as Mary Jane Walsworth from the probation department. Laura Mann will have an update on the Heminger House.

The council members will entertain an additional appropriation request for the 7th Road construction project in the amount of $252,000 from the cumulative bridge fund. The council members will also discuss a salary amendment for a WIC employee.
