Sandra Boldt, president of the St. Joe Valley Blue Star Mothers, recently announced that the organization is once again holding events in Starke County in an effort to garner support for Operation Care Package, an event that Bold said involves packing care packages to be sent overseas to deployed troops. Last year, Boldt said the organization sent 1300 care packages to soldiers, and they’re looking to do it all over again this year.
Walorski to Host Fraud Prevention Workshop at Knox Community Center
Congresswoman Jackie Walorski will be teaming up with Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller’s office in hosting a fraud prevention workshop next week at the office of Community Services of Starke County in Knox. During the workshop, presentations will be given on the latest scams and what seniors can do to protect themselves from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft.
Boating and Hunting Safety Stressed by Conservation Officers
Labor Day weekend is approaching, marking the end to the summer boating season for Hoosiers and the beginning of hunting seasons in the state. With that in mind, Indiana conservation officers are encouraging boaters and hunters to stay safe and revisit safety plans as we transition from one season to the next.
While on the water, the best way to stay safe is to wear your lifejacket, according to Indiana Boating Law Administrator Lt. Kenton Turner. He said lifejackets continue to be the best way to keep drowning statistics low and state waterways safe. According to the United States Coast Guard, 85 percent of drowning victims in recreational boating accidents died because they were not wearing life preservers.
LaPorte Teenagers Arrested after Theft Incidents
Two teenaged boys were taken into custody after reportedly stealing items from several vehicles in the early morning hours on Wednesday.
LaPorte police officers received numerous complaints from residents about unlawful entry into their vehicles. One victim gave police a description of a suspect and the suspect was located with a case in his hand that matched the description of one of the stolen items. The suspect reportedly told police that he found the case lying abandoned and did not know what was inside it. The case contained various cell phones, iPods and car chargers.
Owner Offering Reward in Moyer Grain Burglary
The owner of Moyer Grain in Star City is offering an award for anyone who can give Pulaski County police a tip that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspect who broke into the business.
Owner Jim Gould stated that during the night of Aug. 8, some unknown person(s) broke the door and lock and entered the business. The suspect then took a crow bar and pried open the lock on a safe in the office and took cash and coins.

Town of North Judson to Sell Old Squad Car
The town of North Judson will soon be selling an old squad car, according to Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry. She explained the town will be putting the police cruiser up for bid soon, with a notice to be sent to the newspapers announcing the sale. Henry explained if she is able to get the notice published in time, the board plans to open bids for the vehicle on Sept. 16.
Marshall County Commissioners Approve Comprehensive Plan Amendment
The Marshall County Commissioners held a public hearing Monday morning concerning an amendment to the Town of LaPaz’s Comprehensive Plan.
Plan Commission Director Ralph Booker explained that with the new U.S. 31 project, it was time to update a chapter in the town’s plan to include an upgrade in several aspects of the town. The proposed changes include an upgrade in sidewalks so residents and visitors can safely walk about town; enhance the downtown corridor by creating an attractive and safe community; incorporate welcome signs, decorative lighting and other landscaping to create a friendlier atmosphere, develop a land use plan; and be proactive in the development in the new U.S. 31 realignment.
Pulaski Commissioners Approve Motion Increasing Recyclable Receiving Costs
The Pulaski County Commissioners this week approved a motion at the request of recycling center director Ed Clark to increase the price for receiving goods at the transfer station by one cent per pound after Clark explained the price has not been raised in roughly six years. He said he doesn’t expect to see any problems with raising the cost because landfills are also raising their price, and this just levels the field.
Knox Community School Board Approves High School Textbook Fees
The Knox Community School Board members approved the high school textbook adoption fees during their meeting Monday night.
Superintendent A.J. Gappa explained that they are in line with the middle school textbook fees.
“Most of those fees involve the computers and they’re right in line with the middle school in laptop computer fees for the one-to-one program. By individual classes at the high school, if certain classes call for extra fees, those will be added on top of the computer fees,” explained Gappa.
The middle school fees in the one-to-one computer initiative are $113.50.
Oregon-Davis School Board Approves Contract with Elementary Principal
The Oregon-Davis School Board approved a contract with Elementary Principal William Bennett Monday night.
Interim Superintendent Greg Briles explained that the board was happy to renew the contract with Bennett.
“It was a rollover that had been put off last year in the midst of everything that was going on,” said Briles. “We’re very excited about Mr. Bennett continuing to be our elementary principal. He’s done an excellent job in the past three years that he’s been here. We look forward to bigger and better things in the future.”
NJ-SP Schools to Start Athletic Booster Club
The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is in the process of developing an athletic booster club, according to Superintendent Lynn Johnson. She said Athletic Director Rob Vessely spoke to the board and explained that the effort is currently in the beginning stages and will start with football season as they endeavor to get more people involved in supporting school athletics.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign in Progress in Starke County
The Starke County Traffic Safety Partnership will be conducting sobriety checkpoints throughout the county in the next two weeks to deter impaired driving. Those patrolling during the enforcement will be on the lookout for drivers under the influence especially during the Labor Day holiday.
“Harvesting Our Future” Event This Weekend
The “Harvesting Our Future” event is planned for this weekend at Wythogan Park in Knox. On Saturday, Aug. 24, a car show, games, food booths, vendors and a parade down main street will take place to fill the void left by the Harvest Festival that was canceled this year due to lack of a coordinator.
Board member Lora Thompson Hall told WKVI that the event is focused around providing children in the community with a weekend of fun and community awareness.

September is National Preparedness Month and officials are taking action to plan and prepare for an emergency and for you to help in donating blood. All blood types are needed daily, especially type O negative which is the universal blood type and in frequent demand.

Congresswoman Jackie Walorski announced yesterday that a member of her staff will be in Knox to assist constituents with casework and official business. The staff member will hold officer hours on Monday, Aug. 26 in the commissioner’s office on the first floor of the Starke County Courthouse.
Sheriff’s Deputies Bust Meth Lab in Monterey, Two Arrested
Sheriff’s deputies attempting to serve a felony warrant at a residence in Monterey made two arrests after finding a meth lab. Starke County Sheriff’s Deputies were looking for Bradley Hartwell at a Hazel Street residence and found two men coming out the back door of the trailer when they arrived. Starke County Jail Project Remains on Schedule Despite Water Snag
Despite a philosophical difference between county and city elected officials regarding an infrastructure upgrade for the new Starke County Jail site, the project is still on schedule. The water capacity for the building east of Knox across from Sabre Manufacturing is not adequate, so larger water lines are needed. The county commissioners have agreed to spend up to $50,000 to run new lines to the facility and have obtained an easement from property owners Chuck and Dennis Estok to go through their property to do so. County officials want to get this work done as soon as possible in order to realize a potential savings of $500,000 to taxpayers by keeping the jail project on schedule. That means bid documents for the project have to be ready to go by mid-September.
Starke County Council Approves Ordinances for Jail Funding
Construction of a new Starke County Jail cleared another procedural hurdle with the adoption by the county council of a resolution and ordinance to commit to funding the project. Both are required before the county can sell bonds to finance the construction. They simply state that the additional economic development income tax the county has been collecting for the past year will be used to repay the bonds. The time frame for the project calls for the sale of bonds in November.
Knox Man Arrested on Burglary, Theft Charges after Incident at USA Cafe
A man has been taken into custody after a burglary at the USA Cafe in Knox over the weekend.
In the early morning hours on Saturday, the suspect, 22-year-old Michael Hoekman, reportedly entered the building through a window in the rear of the building. He then allegedly stole electronic items worth approximately $1,500.
